Skyfall

There's only time for a short post today, since I went out to see the new Bond movie with some friends. So I guess I'll give a few quick impressions about the movie...

Overall, a good film and very entertaining: all the action you'd expect from a Bond movie, mixed with a bit of humor, carried out by a top-notch cast, including Javier Bardem as over-the-top villain Silva. And there's a scene between Bardem and Daniel Craig that will no doubt have fangirls writing Bond/Silva slashfic. (You'll definitely recognize it when you see it!) Ralph Fiennes was also great as Gareth Mallory, the Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee who's pressuring M to retire. I also liked Ben Whishaw as a new, younger Q, and Naomie Harris as Eve, an MI6 agent who works with Bond. It was nice to see a strong female character--especially one who wasn't sleeping with Bond!

I'm less happy about Sévérine (played by Bérénice Lim Marlohe), the girlfriend of Silva. Seeing that she's afraid of Silva, Bond promises to protect her if she'll lead him to Silva. Well, you can guess how that goes...he can't protect her after all, and ends up getting her killed. I was kind of expecting that as soon as he made the promise, but it was infuriating that he just stood by and let Silva shoot her because Silva's lackeys were pointing guns at him, but once she was dead, he was suddenly able to turn the tables on them and kick the lackey's asses--he couldn't have managed to do that before she was killed?! Or at least to have tried to save her even if he failed? He didn't seem to waste any time feeling guilty about her death afterwards, either.

Aside from the subplot (which I admit really irked me), the movie was good, and events in this movie have certainly set up some interesting changes for the next film.
