Haru fic recs: Silent Acceptance and miscellaneous ficlets
I was desperate to find some Haru fic that I hadn't read before, so I went combing through the archives of the Youka Nitta comm, looking for fics that had been posted before I joined, and I found a wonderful Sawa/Yukihito fic! I also found a couple of lovely Haru drabbles on A03.
Title: Silent Acceptance
Author: Jaila Heyn (
jailaheyn_fics)
Anime: Haru wo Daite Ita
Pairing: Sawa/Yukihito
Rating: Teen through Mature (varies from chapter to chapter)
Warnings: Incest, BDSM, underage, and (highlight to read spoiler warning)character death (an OC; not the Haru characters)
Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 Part 1 | Chapter 2 Part 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 | Chapter 8 | Chapter 9 | Chapter 10 | Chapter 11 | Chapter 12 | Chapter 13
The prologue starts off on Yukihito's 21st birthday, but most of the story is a flashback explaining how Sawa got his start as a writer and how he and Yukihito became a couple. It's really well done and reads like a missing chapter from canon that covers the time between Sawa quitting the police force and when we first meet him in the manga as an already established bestselling author.
This is a less confident Sawa, who's still struggling to come to terms with his sexuality and identity, and trying to be a good guardian to Yukihito while struggling with his increasing attraction to his young charge. And also struggling financially, working as a night watchman to pay the bills, since he's just getting started as a writer. He gets his first success writing BL fiction, starting off with short stories and eventually working his way up to novels, which felt like a logical progression. As a nice twist, Yukihito serves as his unofficial editor/beta reader, although Sawa has a few initial qualms about Yukihito reading explicit stories.
There's also a wonderful OC named Ayame who befriends Sawa and helps him to accept himself and transform from former cop Tsuneo into the Nagisa that we know from the manga. When they first meet, Sawa thinks she is a young woman, but later founds out that like himself, Ayame is a woman trapped in a man's body. (She is transitioning from male to female and is saving up for a full sex-change.) She works as a porn actress (foreshadowing the Embracing Love movie, perhaps?) and also as a clerk at a gay porn shop. (The shop owner Toisho also becomes a friend to Sawa.) Meeting Ayame helps Sawa to realize that he isn't alone, which makes him feel much less like a freak. Ayame is a very vivid character--outgoing, mischievous, and a take-no-crap type of personality--and she soon felt as real to me as the canon characters.
Yukihito is much like he is in canon--content to be with Sawa, and has no qualms about loving him. His struggles are more external than internal: dealing with annoying classmates and an even more annoying teacher (who has a crush on the male Sawa), and trying to make Sawa accept his feelings and realize that he isn't a child anymore.
Although he kind of is, actually--they have sex while he is under eighteen. It is canon that they're in a relationship while Yukihito is still in high school, judging by his school uniform in the "Six Nine" chapter in Book 7 of the manga, but just to be on the safe side, I added an underage warning to the rec header. I should also note that the author portrays Sawa and Yukihito as uncle and nephew rather than cousins because that's the way she sees them. Personally, this makes the incest angle a little problematic and squicky for me, but I just try to think of them as the canon Sawa and Yukihito.
The spoiler warning is mine, not the author's. I've whited it out because it gives away a major plot point, but I thought that I should note it for people who prefer to avoid such things. For my personal reaction to what happened, you can read the comment I posted on the last chapter of the fic.

Summary: Assorted ficlets from a variety of fandoms. The unifying "theme" here is that I've written at most two or three fics in these fandoms, primarily upon request. Ratings go from gen to mature (if not explicit); ficlet specific rating will be posted in the chapter summary. Please note that there are no crossover fics here -- that's in an entirely different work in the same "series".
This is a collection of ficlets from various fandoms; the Haru ficlets can be found directly on Chapter 30 and Chapter 31. The first is a very poignant and moving scene of Iwaki visiting a grave. To say more would give away a revelation that you might prefer to discover yourself, but don't worry--it's not Katou's grave, and the mood is tender and uplifting rather than sad. The next chapter could be a missing scene from canon set either around the beginning of the first volume of the manga or just prior to it, with Iwaki and Katou both separately vowing to move beyond AV into mainstream acting.
My only complaint is that I wish the ficlets were longer or that there were more of them! ^_^ But I was happy to have any Haru fic to read at all, and I enjoyed several of the other ficlets from different fandoms that I happened to be familiar with, particularly the Saiyuki and Trigun ones.
