Yuletide nominations coming soon!
Hard to believe, but Yuletide is almost upon us! (Which reminds me, guiltily, that there's still a bunch of fic from last Yuletide that I've been meaning to read but never got around to.) Fandom nominations begin on Sep. 24th, and you can find the full Yuletide schedule on this post.
This will be my third Yuletide, and I'm kind of struggling with which fandoms to nominate, since we're only allowed three (along with 4 characters per fandom). I'm going with my usual Haru wo Daiteita, and another Yuletider plans to nominate Suzanne Brockmann's Troubleshooters, Inc. series--I've reviewed her books in some of my slash novel posts, due to the awesomeness of her gay characters Jules and Robin. That suddenly awoke a craving I didn't realize I had for some Troubleshooters fic (Jules/Robin in particular)!
Unfortunately, that will take up 2 of my 3 precious slots. (I still need to nomm Troubleshooters even if the other person does too, in order to cover all the characters that we both want.) Which leaves me agonizing over that final nomination, since there are three more fandoms that I really want to request: the J-drama Aibou, J.D. Robb's In Death series, and Mercedes Lackey's Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms. I'll list my ramblings below on the off-chance that someone out there might also be interested in reading/writing these for Yuletide:
Aibou | Partners
1. Sugishita Ukyo
2. Kameyama Kaoru
3. Kanbe Takeru
4. Itami Kenichi
This is my top choice, but I suspect that this is a fandom of one and that chances of getting any fic are slim. It's hugely popular in Japan, but it's only aired on a few Asian foreign language stations in the US, and I can't find any fanfic for it online. (An "Aibou fanfic" search seems to pull up only Yugi-Oh stories.) It's a great detective series with Ukyo using Sherlock Holmes-like skills of deduction and reasoning to solve crimes, aided by his hot-tempered but good-hearted partner Kaoru--it's got the whole bromance cop vibe going on, so why is fandom not all over this? ;-) The dynamic changes when Kaoru is replaced by Kanbe in Season 8, but it's interesting to see how their characters contrast, and how Kanbe has to work to earn a standoffish Ukyo's trust and respect. You see a brief synopsis here, and the DramaWiki entry is here.
Basically, Ukyo and his partner(s) have been demoted to the Special Missions office, which is where the Metropolitan Police Department sends its losers and troublemakers in the hopes that they'll quit (out of boredom, since they're given no official duties, although being paid to do nothing doesn't sound too bad to me). However, Ukyo and Kaoru (and later Kanbe) blithely investigate whichever cases catch Ukyo's interest and usually wind up solving them due to Ukyo noticing some small detail that the official detectives overlooked. The Division One detectives, led by Itami (who is Kaoru's former partner), resent Special Mission's interference and aren't shy about letting them know it. Still, beneath the name-calling and sarcastic insults, there seems to be a friendship of sorts between Kaoru and Itami (though neither would ever admit it), and over the years, we increasingly see Itami becoming frustrated with the restrictions placed upon him by the top brass (for example, being told to back off an investigation where a big-shot politician is a suspect)--restrictions that Ukyo freely ignores, which I suspect is what really pisses Itami off. (There's a complicated story behind why Ukyo isn't simply fired for insubordination, involving the protection of a high-ranking police official.) Beneath Itami's abrasive personality is a decent guy and an honest cop, and I've grown almost as fond of him as I am of the main characters.
Unfortunately, there are no English-subbed dvds available as far as I know, though Japanese-language dvds are available, of course. A web search will pull up video links, but I hestitate to list them here, since I don't believe that any of them are officially licensed.
I really, really want to nominate this one, and Yuletide is for rare fandoms, but I'm worried that it might be a little too rare, especially since nobody but me offered to write Haru last year. Which would leave only Troubleshooters as a possible match if no one offers to write Haru or Aibou. (I guess it would go out to the pinch hit list in the unlikely event that no one at all offers to write any of the fandoms I request?) I did get one response on the fandom brainstorming post from someone who is at least somewhat familiar with the series and is a Mizutani Yutaka fan. So maybe I should go for it?
Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms - Mercedes Lackey
1. Siegfried
2. Leopold
3. Rosamund
4.
This is a romance/fantasy series taking place in a world where a mysterious force called The Tradition tries to steer people down the path of various fairy tale tropes (Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, the Wicked Stepmother, etc.)--but not all fairy tales have happy endings, so the Godmothers try their best to manipulate The Tradition to bring about the best possible result and to prevent people from being harmed--for example, a maiden in distress might have an equal chance of being rescued by a handsome prince or of being seduced and discarded by a dastardly rake. The canon romances are all heteronormative, but there are brief mentions that a prince might prefer another prince to a princess and vice versa, so I would love to see some slashy fic--or to see some meta-type fic exploring how The Tradition works.
Sleeping Beauty is my favorite book in the series, so I'm tentatively nominating the three main characters from that story. Lots of slashy potential there with the close friendship between rival princes Siegfried and Leo, and there's an offhand remark about a "prince" who enters the competition for Princess Rosamand's hand in marriage--but is disqualified when it's revealed that the prince is really a princess. Rosa makes it clear (though politely so) that she isn't interested in marrying a princess, and that plot point is dropped. But I couldn't help wondering what would have happened if Rosa wasn't opposed to the idea, and the princess were allowed to compete along with the princes after all...
However, I would be okay with fic about other characters from other books in the series, or even OCs in a worldbuilding type story.
In Death - J.D. Robb
1. Eve Dallas
2. Roarke
3. Delia Peabody
4. Charles Monroe
I wrote for this fandom last year and had a blast doing it, and would really love to read/write more In Death fic! It's a futuristic mystery series with a number of strong female characters, including the kick-ass (sometimes literally) heroine Eve Dallas. I also love Eve's assistant/partner Peabody, who's a bit more light-hearted and girly compared to the intense and often angsty Eve, but also a strong woman and cop all the same. I enjoy the Eve/Roarke romance in the books, but for me, the best part about the series is Eve and Peabody's friendship. (I also like the somewhat different type of friendship between Eve and Mira.)
I love this fandom, but I'm leaning towards nominating something new, since I did request and write this last year. (I didn't receive an In Death fic, but I was able to read an awesome case-fic that was written for another recipient.)
