Grimm
I've been meaning to rec this for awhile now--I really love the TV show Grimm, which is currently in its second season. It starts off with the basic premise of a police procedural show (the main character, Nick, is a homicide detective in Portland), but adds a unique fantasy/horror twist: creatures from fairy tales and folklore, like werewolves and witches, are actually real. Nick discovers that he is descended from a long line of Grimms, described as "an elite line of criminal profilers" that research, track down, and kill the fairy tale creatures, who call themselves Wesen. When Nick suddenly comes into his Grimm heritage, he finds himself able to see the true forms of the Wesen (who appear as normal people to ordinary humans), and realizes that many of the crimes he is investigating involve Wesen as the murderers and/or the victims.
Grimms normally kill any Wesen they come across, assuming that they're all monsters, but many are just trying to live peaceful and ordinary lives, like Monroe, the Blutbad (something like a werewolf) who is at first a suspect, but eventually becomes Nick's friend and ally. Nick, being a good cop, can't condone killing someone in cold blood, so he only targets Wesen who break the law, and tries to arrest rather than kill them, if possible. Things, however, begin getting complicated when someone starts sending Wesen assassins to kill him, and sometimes he has to step outside the bounds of the law in order to defend himself, since it's kind of hard to explain to the authorities that a werecreature is trying to kill you. And Nick's relationships with his partner Hank and his girlfriend Juliette are complicated and strained by the fact that he has to hide his new Grimm knowledge from them, because there's no way to explain it to them without sounding like he's crazy.
The cast is great, and they have great chemistry with each other, especially Nick (David Giuntoli) and Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell)--I love the friendship between the two, and it's no surprise that slash fans ship these two, although I do like Nick's canon relationship with Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch). I also like Nick's relationship with his partner Hank (Russell Hornsby), a solid but slightly different sort of friendship than the one he has with Monroe. Also love the handsome and enigmatic Captain Renard (Sasha Roiz) and the wisecracking Sgt. Wu (Reggie Lee). Lee is great and so funny as Wu! He's a minor supporting character, but I'd like to see him get a larger role (and a first name would be nice, too).
The reason why I finally decided to make a Grimm post is partly because of Lee. The dvd set for the first season is out, and the last disc has some bonus material. There's the usual deleted scenes, gag reel, and "making of" featurettes, but what I found most interesting were the audition videos for Giuntoli, Mitchell, Tulloch, Hornsby, and Lee. What's interesting about it is that Lee originally auditioned for the role of Hank (which ended up going to Hornsby), so you get a glimpse of what Hank might have been like if he'd been played by Lee. (Some of the humor he uses as Wu comes across in the Hank audition; you can hear the casting people laughing in the background.) Although Lee didn't get that role, the producers said in the "making of" feature that they liked him so much that they created the role of Wu for him, which is pretty cool.
There's a lot more stuff about the show I'd like to rave about or discuss, but I don't want to spoil those of you who haven't seen it yet. So I'll just say that I highly recommend it! As mentioned above, the Season 1 dvd set is available (maybe you can hint to your personal Santa that you'd love to get it for Christmas), or it's available on Netflix if you prefer to rent rather than buy. And you can currently stream Season 2 episodes on the official NBC homepage.
