My Yuletide Gift!
I'll post a longer recs list later, but I just wanted to squee about my Yuletide gift right now! I received an awesome In Death fic this year:
Reminder in Death (3300 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: In Death - J. D. Robb
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Eve Dallas/Roarke, Ian McNab/Delia Peabody
Characters: Eve Dallas, Charlotte Mira, Delia Peabody, Ian McNab, Roarke (In Death)
Summary: It's Christmas Eve and a particular case is weighing heavily on Dallas's mind.
This is such a wonderful story! Eve has just finished wrapping up a case that ended in heartbreaking tragedy, and she's deeply affected by it. As usual, she stubbornly tries to deal with it all on her own, but her friends insist on being there to support her: Dr. Mira, in her motherly and compassionate manner, and also Peabody with a more direct but equally heartfelt speech. The sorrow of the tragedy is balanced by humor that feels very much like the canon source: Eve's bemusement with Mira's impractical high heels, and her usual horrified reaction to being confronted with evidence of Peabody's love life ("Oh my sweet, blushing Jesus. Tell me you didn’t just call to inform me that you and McNabb had sex."). ^_^
Roarke is there for Eve too, of course, and even Galahad seems to sense that Eve needs comfort. A wonderful story that really felt like canon and offered everything that I love most about the series: emotional hurt/comfort, strong bonds of friendship and love, and the trademark humor. The author had all the characters' voices down perfectly, and it was really a delight to read! Highly recommended for all In Death fans--it's a nice fix to tide us over until the next book comes out.
