Fanfic Tropes Meme (#7-9)

General:
7. One-shots or longfic?
8. Do you read WIPs?
9. What is the longest fic you’ve read?

I do like reading longfic, but I'll admit, I'm more likely to read a shorter one-shot unless I have a lot of time on my hands, since they're easier to finish when I'm busy. (Though I do have a whole lot of stuff on my "to read" list.) Of course, if it's a longfic by one of my favorite authors or in a rare fandom that I love, I'm more likely to jump into the longfic right away.

I do read WIPs, though I tend to be a bit wary unless I know the author, because I've been burned before. I remember there was this really compelling Snupin fic years ago on the Snape/Lupin Yahoo Group where Lupin and Snape were both having sexy dreams about each other, though neither of them was aware that the other was dreaming about him. It was really starting to get interesting when the author suddenly stopped, and I never heard from them again even after a bit of gentle nudging. It still drives me crazy that I'll never know what was causing the dreams, because it seemed to be something more significant than repressed attraction. I'd even be happy if they never finished the story, but just told me how they planned to end it. (Unless the problem was that they didn't know how to end it?)

If you asked me what the longest fic I ever wrote was, I'm sure it would be my Snupin story Aftermaths (89 chapters long on LJ/IJ)! But I'm not sure what the longest one I've ever read was--I've read a number of long, epic-length Petshop and Snupin fics, but not all of them had word counts listed. I went searching for some old favorites I hadn't read in awhile and found Drive by (pairing Leon/D, originally posted on the PSOH fanfic Yahoo Group), now archived on A03 showing a word count of 89,773. Another long one was Flowing Through by Ladye, another Leon/D PSOH fic, 47 chapters long + ending and epilogue, though I don't have a word count for it. The longest Snupin I can think of offhand is a never-finished WIP from the Snape_n_Lupin Yahoo Group, The Potions Master's Daughter, by Orphen Eritus--it was about 93,000 words long when the author last left off. (It's one of my favorites, and I'm kind of sad it was never finished.)
