Fanfic Tropes Meme (#32-33)
AU:
32. Favorite AU tropes?
33. Least favorite AU tropes?
I don't read a lot of AUs (except when they come across my radar during Snupin Santa or some other fest), so I'm not sure that I have a favorite or least favorite trope. I am kind of fond of stories where Snape is a chef, partly because it seems to suit his personality and partly because I love reading descriptions about food. (The latter might come from watching too many J-dramas where people always seem to be eating. Doesn't matter if it's a comedy, romance, or detective drama--there always seems to be at least one scene where the characters are sitting down together for a meal, or at least stopping at a ramen stand after work. But I digress.)
I've read all kinds of Snupin AUs (there don't seem to be many Petshop or Haru AUs), ranging from (non-magical) college professors, detectives, superheroes, pirates, and the above-mentioned chef trope, and I don't think I've ever come across one that I've hated. I think that as long as the writer creates an interesting story and keeps the characters' personalities true to their canon selves, an AU can be enjoyable, though I generally prefer to read stories that take place in the canon setting.
