***

Iwaki had been away from home for a few days on a location shoot, and Katou had warned him in advance that he was planning a surprise for dinner. However, he hadn't expected to find Katou proudly placing a huge roast turkey on the dining table.

"Katou!" Iwaki protested. "The two of us can't possibly eat all this!"

"I know, that's why I've invited some friends over for dinner," Katou replied cheerfully. Before Iwaki could ask him why they were having a dinner party, the doorbell rang and Katou said, "Could you get that, Iwaki-san? I need to get the mashed potatoes from the kitchen."

Shaking his head in bewilderment, Iwaki went to answer the door, and found Yoshizumi, Miyasaka, Onozuka, and Kikuchi standing outside the front gate. They all seemed to be carrying covered dishes, except for Onozuka, who was holding a bottle of wine. "This is something of a surprise, but it's nice to see all of you," Iwaki said politely. "Please come in."

"Did Katou-kun not tell you we were coming?" Yoshizumi asked, smiling. "How very typical of him."

"Well, he did tell me that he was planning some sort of surprise," Iwaki admitted as he led his guests into the house. "But I'm not sure what the special occasion is."

"It's Thanksgiving," Katou informed him, as he set a bowl of steaming, buttery mashed potatoes on the table next to the turkey.

"Thanksgiving? Isn't that an American holiday?" Iwaki asked, feeling more confused than ever.

"Yeah, I don't get it, either," Miyasaka said with a shrug. "Something to do with Pilgrims and Indians...and turkey?"

"I think the turkey was a later addition, along with football and Black Friday shopping sprees," Kikuchi chuckled. "But I'll spare you the history lesson."

"When I was studying in the U.S. while you were working on Mochimune's film, some of my American friends invited me to spend Thanksgiving with them," Katou said. "They told me that Thanksgiving was about being thankful for the people you love and spending time with them. And the person I am most thankful for is my beloved Iwaki-san, of course! So I decided that I would spend Thanksgiving with you." Almost as an afterthought, he added, "And my friends."

"I'm touched," Onozuka said sarcastically, handing the bottle of wine over to Iwaki.

"I'm not thankful for you, though," Katou said, scowling at Kikuchi. "I only invited you because Onozuka insisted on it."

"But I brought the pumpkin pie," Kikuchi said with a grin. "You ought to at least be thankful for that."

"If it's edible," Katou said disdainfully.

"I can confirm that he is a good cook--and baker," Onozuka defended his lover. With a sly, sidelong glance at Kikuchi, "And he's good at other things as well."

Kikuchi grinned lewdly at him, and Katou said hastily, "Let's not get into that!"

"I agree, let's avoid any nauseating talk about romance," Yoshizumi agreed.

"We're with Katou and Iwaki-san," Miyasaka pointed out. "It's practically unavoidable."

"I brought the stuffing," Yoshizumi said, quickly changing the subject. "And it looks like the turkey is ready, so shall we eat?"

"Sure, I'll carve the turkey," Katou said.

"Are you sure you don't need a little help with that, Katou-kun?" Kikuchi asked with an air of condescending courtesy. "It is a man's job, after all."

"I'm the man of the house!" Katou snapped.

"Oh, really?" Iwaki asked in an icy voice.

"Um...I mean, along with Iwaki-san, of course," Katou amended nervously, giving Iwaki a contrite smile. Iwaki wasn't really angry, but he kept up a stern look anyway, just because Katou looked so adorable when he was trying to backpedal like that. Not that Iwaki would ever admit to thinking such a nauseatingly romantic thing, of course, especially around Yoshizumi-san.

Kikuchi smirked, and Katou glared at his old rival as he carved up the turkey, somewhat inexpertly, with the pieces coming out a bit ragged and uneven. Though to be fair, this was the first time that Katou had ever carved a turkey, although he could cut up a roast chicken with no problems.

Iwaki poured out glasses of wine, smiling as he watched Katou bicker with Kikuchi, who was "helpfully" critiquing Katou's carving skills and offering unwanted advice, while the others watched with amusement. Finally, the turkey was carved and everyone's plates were filled with food, and Iwaki raised his glass in a toast.

"I was surprised when Katou wanted to celebrate Thanksgiving, but I think it's a good reminder to stop and be thankful for the people in our lives. So thank you all for contributing to this meal. I'm grateful to be able to spend time with all of you, our friends, and especially grateful to have such a loving husband."

"Really?" Katou asked, beaming with joy.

"Really," Iwaki said, leaning over to plant a kiss on his lips.

"Please, you're going to spoil my appetite," Yoshizumi groaned in mock dismay.

"Then we shall be thankful to Yoshizumi-san for keeping us from becoming too maudlin," Iwaki laughed, and the others laughed as well and raised their glasses in salute. As they ate, they traded stories about work and gossip about their coworkers--and as always, Onozuka had the juiciest gossip. Iwaki smiled, watching Katou trade joking insults with Onozuka and Miyasaka, and a few more pointed insults with Kikuchi, while Yoshizumi watched over them with a resigned and amused air, rather like a parent or older brother, which was somewhat ironic considering that Kikuchi was older than he was. Or at least, Iwaki thought so, although no one seemed to know Yoshizumi's exact birth date, and Onozuka had once made a joke about Yoshizumi consuming mermaid flesh to stay eternally youthful.

It suddenly occurred to Iwaki that his life had been lonely and solitary before Katou had forced his way into it. Not only had he been estranged from his family, he'd had no serious lovers and no close friends--he hadn't really had a life outside of work at all. Katou had not only given Iwaki his love--for which alone, Iwaki would have been eternally grateful--but he had also opened up Iwaki's world, bringing him new friendships and helping him to reconcile with family.

As if reading his mind, Katou said, "I invited your family and mine to spend Thanksgiving with us, but unfortunately, they couldn't make it. But my folks invited us to spend Christmas with them, and I thought we'd visit your family to pay our respects on New Year's Day. I'm still determined to make Big Brother accept me into the family!"

"You just want those baby pictures of Iwaki-san," Onozuka teased.

"I do!" Katou replied without any shame. "Big Brother is so mean not to share them with me!"

"Isn't that because Big Brother thinks you're a pervert?" Kikuchi asked dryly.

"Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black, you pervy old man?" Katou retorted.

Iwaki burst into laughter, and everyone turned to stare at him in surprise.

"Um...Iwaki-san, are you all right?" Katou asked hesitantly. "I'm sorry for fighting with Kikuchi-san." He glanced at Kikuchi and muttered under his breath, "Even though he started it."

"Yes, I'm fine," Iwaki replied, grinning. "I was just thinking that I'm happy we could all be here together today--even Kikuchi-san."

"That's a rather backhanded compliment," Kikuchi grumbled good-naturedly.

"Then...Iwaki-san is enjoying Thanksgiving?" Katou asked hopefully.

"Very much so," Iwaki confirmed. "It was a wonderful idea, Katou. We should do it every year."

"Iwaki-san, I'm so happy!" Katou cried, flinging his arms around Iwaki and kissing him. And although Iwaki usually scolded him for such public displays of affection, Iwaki hugged and kissed him back.

"Simply nauseating," Yoshizumi groaned.

"I told you so," Miyasaka said.

"Our two lovebirds can't seem to help themselves," Onozuka laughed.

"Just ignore them," Kikuchi advised. "Want some pie?"

"Thanks, I don't mind if I do," Yoshizumi said, tucking into a piece with good appetite, despite his claims of being nauseated.

"Happy Thanksgiving, Iwaki-san," Katou whispered.

"Happy Thanksgiving, Katou," Iwaki replied lovingly.

"Enough already, you two, or I really will start throwing up!" Yoshizumi said, waving his fork at them threateningly, and they laughed and resumed Thanksgiving dinner with their friends.

-End-

***

Afterword: I was preparing for Thanksgiving dinner with my family, and I started wondering how Katou and Iwaki would celebrate that holiday--except that they wouldn't, since it's an American holiday. But then I started thinking about how Katou went to the U.S. when he and Iwaki were forced to live apart by Mochimune, so depending on when that was, he might be familiar with Thanksgiving. And then I thought that Katou would use any excuse to celebrate his love for Iwaki, so I ended up writing a Haru Thanksgiving fic!

Mermaid flesh conferring immortality seems to be a Japanese legend: it's the basis of Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Saga manga, and also plays a part in the Onmyoji movie. And our discussion about it also inspired Bronze Ribbon's drabble Fountains of Opportunity, although Katou is the youthful looking one there, with Yoshizumi being nauseated as always. ^_^

This was a wonderfully written story. If anyone would decide to host a Thanksgiving dinner in Japan it would be Katou.
Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome! I think Katou enjoys any excuse to celebrate. ^_^ I may have to come up with more holiday stories for him--too bad Halloween has already passed...
