My Yuletide gifts!
Yes, the plural "gifts" is correct--I got a treat this year for the very first time! Not that I was expecting one or feel that I'm owed anything other than my official gift, but I was really excited to get a little something extra in my stocking this year, and really happy that one of my prompts motivated someone to write a story for it. And both gifts (in Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms and Troubleshooters Inc.) were amazing!
My official gift was:
Scrambling (3270 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1

Summary: When Siegfried and Leopold run into complications on a quest, it's up to the ladies to save the day.
I was so excited to get Tales of the the Five Hundred Kingdoms fic! I love the fairy tale theme of the canon source, and the particular novel (Sleeping Beauty) that the story is based on is my favorite in the series. The author obviously read my long, rambling Dear Yuletide letter and went out of their way to include a number of my prompts: friendshippy bonding, the guys going on a quest and running into trouble (their wives and Godmother Lily come to save the day in awesome fashion). They even included Adrian of Beau Soleil, a princess disguised as a prince that I mentioned in passing in the optional details--I found that character/tiny subplot really interesting, but as Adrian wasn't on the official nominated list, I wasn't really expecting that character to show up. So I was delighted when Adrian not only made an appearance, but played a significant role and got a very cleverly devised happy ending. (I'm being a little vague, because it would be spoiling the surprise to give away more details.)
I had requested "any" character, so I would have been happy with a story about one or two of the main characters, but my Mystery Author went above and beyond the call of duty to include all the nominated characters plus a few extras! I loved the humor of the fic with the quest-gone-awry and the friendship and banter between Siegfried and Leopold which felt very true to canon. And I also loved the ladies being awesome and saving the day, and I loved the plot twist with Adrian! This was a great fic that really feels like an official sequel to the novel.
And my Yuletide Madness treat was:
(I've Got You) Under My Skin (906 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Troubleshooters Inc. - Suzanne Brockmann
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jules Cassidy/Robin Chadwick
Characters: Robin Chadwick Cassidy, Roger "Sam" Starrett, Jules Cassidy
Additional Tags: Undercover as a Couple
Summary: Robin isn't happy when Jules's new assignment is to go undercover with Sam as his fake boyfriend.
Those of you who read my blog know that I'm a big fan of Suzanne Brockmann's Troubleshooters Inc. novels, and in particular, of gay FBI agent Jules Cassidy and his lover (eventually husband) actor Robin Chadwick. And also of the friendship between Jules and former Navy SEAL Sam Starrett, who initially disapproved of Robin, who carried a lot of baggage with him (formerly closeted gay actor and a former alcoholic who was frequently in the tabloids).
I was so thrilled that my Mystery Author chose a prompt that I'd really been hoping for: Jules and Sam have to go undercover as a gay couple for an assignment. Robin isn't too thrilled about this, but not for the reasons one might expect--which surprised both Sam and me. I loved the way this story showed how much both Sam and Robin have matured over the years, and also loved the strong bonds between both Jules and Robin, and Jules and Sam. A really lovely and beautiful fic that shows the strength of both relationships.
