My Yuletide Gifts--Haru and Foreigner fics!
What an awesome Yuletide--I got not just one, but two great gifts! I feel rich! ^_^
One was for the Foreigner SF novel series by C.J. Cherryh, and one was for Haru wo Daiteita (Embracing Love):
Like A River, Like The Wind (1646 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Foreigner Series - C. J. Cherryh
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bren Cameron/Jago
Characters: Bren Cameron, Jago (Foreigner)
Additional Tags: Vignette, Waxing Philisophical, Alien Culture, Love, manchi
Summary: There's a general (if unspoken) consensus, among those who understand what Manchi is, that it's a great deal more complicated than love.
Bren Cameron disagrees.
I had asked for a story examing the similarities and differences between love and manchi, and/or something written from an Atevi POV, and my author gave me exactly what I wanted! It's an introspective fic with Jago and Bren alone in a relaxed moment, discussing love and manchi, with Jago trying very hard to understand how Bren thinks, but not quite succeeding. I can relate, because while I am fascinated by the Atevi characters, trying too hard to imagine how they think gives me a bit of a headache, too! Nevertheless, there's a strong bond of trust and affection between Jago and Bren that remains unbroken, and like Jago, I think that their conversation helps me to understand the concepts of love vs. manchi a little better, even if I don't completely grasp it. And I love the little jokes they make about salads!
(For those of you unfamiliar with the series, the alien Atevi species does not feel emotions such as "liking" and "love" the way humans do: one "likes" a favorite food such as a salad; to "like" a person in that manner seems absurd to them. They are, however, biologically wired to feel manchi, described in the Wiki entry as "a loyalty-web to one's leader, one's leader's leader, and so on". The bond of manchi that Bren's Atevi bodyguards have for him often feels very much like friendship or love from a human perspective, and no doubt Bren's love and respect for them probably seems similar to manchi to the Atevi. Cherryh has done a great worldbuilding job in this series, creating an alien species that are human enough to identify with, while at the same time having them be different enough to seem truly alien.)
The Fine Art of Improvisation (1163 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Haru wo Daiteita | Embracing Love
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Iwaki Kyousuke/Katou Youji
Characters: Iwaki Kyousuke, Katou Youji
Summary: Sometimes performing requires a healthy doses of improvisation, every actor knows about it.
I've been doing Yuletide for 5 years, and listed Haru as one of my fandoms each time, and now I've finally received a Haru fic! This was a really cute and funny story with Iwaki and Katou being...well, Iwaki and Katou. Katou wants Iwaki to rehearse a rather, ahem, unusual scene with him, and Iwaki is sternly trying to refuse, but well...when Katou pleads, how can Iwaki resist? I laughed out loud when it was finally revealed what the scene was about, so I won't spoil it for you! I will just say that the story was so much fun to read with their typical arguing and banter and love for each other.
