Yuletide Reveals!

Reveals are now official, so here is the fic I wrote for Yuletide, plus some rambling thoughts about the writing process:

All Through the Night (and Through the Years) (8831 words) by geri_chan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Troubleshooters Inc. - Suzanne Brockmann
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jules Cassidy/Robin Chadwick
Characters: Jules Cassidy, Robin Chadwick Cassidy, Roger "Sam" Starrett, Alyssa Locke
Summary: Sam, Alyssa, and their kids throw a baby shower for Jules and Robin, who reminisce about past adventures as they await the birth of their daughter.

Notes: Writen for Frostfire. Also, much thanks to Lawless523 for betaing the story. Any remaining mistakes are mine, not hers.

I love the Troubleshooters novels, and Jules is one of my favorite characters in that series, so I was happy to be matched on that fandom and character. What made me even more excited was that my recip had so many awesome prompts--in fact, I had trouble picking just one, so I ended up combining several of them.

The first prompt that caught my attention was for a post-canon story about Jules and Robin becoming parents, and I soon had a plot bunny about Sam, Alyssa, and their kids throwing a baby shower for Jules and Robin. But I also love the friendship between Jules and Sam, and I loved my recip's prompt of "Jules impressing some of these big bad SEAL boys"! Which led to the "fashion police" segment of the fic, which was a lot of fun to write and my favorite part of the story, so I'm really glad that Frostfire liked it, too! (I chose Izzy and Karmody as the SEALs for that scene, since they seem to be the jokesters of the bunch.)

But I also wanted to fulfill the request for "porn for Jules and Robin" (because they never get an explicit sex scene in the books), which combines nicely with the prompt of "Jules is all protective and badass and territorial out of the bedroom, but Robin is in charge inside it," which in turn inspired me to combine it with "Jules going absolutely postal to save Robin’s ass". Because I love when Jules gets all protective and possessive of Robin, and I figured that a scene of him going postal to save Robin would be a nice lead-in to some tension-relieving sex!

But then the question was, how do I combine all these prompts with the original baby shower idea? I considering scrapping the other ideas and concentrating on just one prompt, but I was so in love with them that I didn't want to give any of them up. Then I realized that the baby shower could work as a frame for Jules and Robin reminiscing about past events, and I could tie in the other scenes as flashbacks, so that's how the story came together!

I really enjoyed writing the Jules and Sam friendship scenes, because that is one of my favorite things about the canon. I also love Alyssa and think that her friendship/partnership with Jules is equally awesome, but there's something special about Sam and Jules to me because of how much Sam has evolved as a character. When he and Jules first meet, Sam is a bit homophobic and awkward around Jules, but slowly comes to respect him. And that evolves into a genuine friendship between the two, and I love how close they become in the later books, and how supportive and protective Sam eventually is of Jules. A little overprotective at times, as when we see him antagonize Robin in the beginning of All Through the Night (the novel, not my fic), but another thing that I like about Sam is that he's willing to own up to his mistakes, and he does apologize and mend his behavior when he's wrong. He's no saint, but very human in his failings and his virtues, which makes him an all the more interesting and likeable character to me.

And because I love the Sam/Jules friendship so much, I just had to have them name the baby after Sam! (And Jane too, since she's so important to Robin.) I am quite tickled and so happy that Frostfire liked that bit of fanon!

I also enjoyed the opportunity to write an older Haley and Ash, since they're only babies when we meet them in the books. Which reminds me that another thing I liked about the books was how Mary Lou was at first an unsympathetic rival for Sam's affections, but eventually became a three-dimensional character that I ended up rooting for. Like Sam, she grew and evolved into a better person, and that is what I love about the books, how human and complex even the supporting characters are when they could easily have been two-dimensional stereotypes. I also love her second husband Ihbraham, and I hope someday we get to see more of him and Mary Lou and the baby they had together, along with Haley. I only mentioned them in passing in this story, but someday I'd like to write a fic focusing on them. (Add it to the ever-growing list of plotbunnies!)

***

I had hoped to write a few treats, but the Troubleshooters fic kind of ate my brain, and working the various prompts into one story took longer than I thought it would. But I still hope to write them as NYR fics, which will be my New Year's Resolution for this year--to actually buckle down and write them!
