Yuletide Reveal
Yuletide reveals are out so now I can announce the fic that I wrote this year, along with my usual meta rambling about writing the story:

Summary: Ballister begins receiving letters from Nimona as the TV news coincidentally--or not so coincidentally--airs reports about shark attacks and abominable snowman sightings.

As some of you might remember, I blogged about the graphic novel Nimona back in November, so I was surprised and delighted that my Yuletide recip wanted "Post-epilogue Blackheart/Goldenloin + Nimona coming back" fic, and an additional suggestion of epistolary fic sparked the plot bunnies, and I almost immediately came up with the idea of Nimona sending letters and souvenirs to Ballister as she travels around the world. I really wanted Ballister and Nimona to reunite, but I figured that it would take some time for them to work things out, given Nimona's fear of betrayal and the fact that she and Ambrosius have been enemies up until now.
Since the ending of the book seemed to indicate that she'd forgiven Ballister even if she wasn't ready to come back home, I thought the letters would be a good way for her to stay in touch but still keep some distance between them--sort of testing the waters, so to speak. And it also gave Ambrosius a chance to get to know the Nimona that Ballister knew and loved, and time enough for him to realize that Nimona is part of Ballister's family, too.
I came up with the idea of Goldilocks the guinea pig to tweak Goldenloin's vanity a bit, and he was also inspired by the pet guinea pigs I had when I was a child. One of them was very friendly and liked to purr a lot when I petted him, and another had light golden-brown fur the same color as Goldilocks (although it was short-haired rather than long). And yes, guinea pigs actually do "purr": this is a video of a purring guinea pig, in case you were curious.
As mentioned in the end notes, the story was also inspired by the two Christmas stories at the end of the book, and also by the Gay Dads AU sketches for Nimona's Christmas gifts. I'd love to read a story actually based on the AU--I need to go look up the older Nimona fics on A03 now!
I was a little nervous taking on a fandom I hadn't written before, but I'm glad that I did! I love the characters so much, and Tyleet's prompt was a lot of fun to write. There were also four other Nimona fics written for Yuletide, all of them great, so if you like the Nimona book/comics, please go check them out!
