FIC: White Day Mission

My entry for the Be The First challenge is now up on A03! I am, as far as I can tell, the very first one to write an English language fic for the Japanese detective drama Aibou (also known as "Partners"). I suspect there may be some fanfic written in Japanese, but my Japanese skills aren't really good enough to search for it, let alone read it.

Summary: Kai decides to investigate the reason behind Sugishita's popularity on Valentine's Day.

I'm not sure how well it holds up as a stand-alone fic, but some basic background for the story is that the Special Mission office of the Metropolitan Police Department is known as the "graveyard of talent" where misfit cops are sent when their bosses can't outright fire them but hope they'll quit on their own. Special Mission has no official duties or investigative powers, though they're occasionally assigned menial tasks, and nearly everyone who is sent there quits out of boredom. The office is headed by the eccentric genius Inspector Sugishita, who unofficially investigates cases that catch his attention.

The fic takes place during Season 11, when Sugishita's current partner is rookie detective Kai, who has learned to respect Sugishita's talent, while still being bemused (and sometimes amused) by his boss's eccentricity. In episode 14 (Valentine Plan), he jokingly tells another character that the seemingly unpopular Sugishita actually has a house filled with Valentine's chocolate. Which led to a conversation between me and another Aibou fan on Fail Fandom Anon speculating about why he's so popular and what he does for his White Day return gifts. The idea stuck in my head, so I ended up writing a story about it for this challenge.

It was a ton of fun to write, even if only a few people end up reading it, so maybe I'll get around to writing more Aibou fic one day.

There seem to be some Aibou fansubs (and raw videos) up on Dramacool and Dramanice, although not all of the 14 seasons are available. I really wish this series had an official subtitled streamed or dvd release so that I could rec it to more people!
