More of what I'm watching

Some quick thoughts on shows that I'm currently watching: Criminal Minds, NCIS, Bull, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: LA, and Scorpion. Contains a few spoilers below the cut if you haven't started watching the current season yet.

Criminal Minds: I was sad to see Hotch go, and it's too bad that the problems with the actor resulted in having to write a beloved character out of the show. And it's also disillusioning to learn that Thomas Gibson is apparently a big jerk, if the allegations are true. (I know that actors are not the characters they play, but I loved Dharma and Greg, and part of me can't help thinking, "But Greg would never do that!") Anyway, I've only seen the first 2 episodes of the current season and need to catch up on the rest, but being a former CSI Miami fan, it's nice to see Adam Rodriguez playing the new agent, Alvez, so I plan to stick with the show for now. Rodriguez also played a male stripper in the Magic Mike movies, so it's kind of amusing to imagine Miami's Delko becoming a stripper after leaving the CSI lab, and then returning to law enforcement as an FBI agent!

NCIS: I was disappointed when Michael Weatherly (Tony) left the show, and wasn't too thrilled about them killing off Ziva off-screen. However, I tentatively like the new agents Torres and Quinn, and it's nice to see Jennifer Esposito in the latter role since I liked her on Blue Bloods. While she's not a Tony clone, my sister likes that it's Quinn, the female agent, who is the wisecracker providing some comic relief rather than the male agent. I'm also very happy to see the MI-6 agent, Reeves, returning--I really liked him last season and remember saying that I hoped they'd add him to the cast after Weatherly left. I wasn't quite sure how that would work, but I figured if they could have a Mossad agent joining NCIS, they could find a way to work in the MI-6 guy, and it turns out that a joint investigation provides a more plausible excuse.

And I don't know if it's just me, but I used to adore Abby but lately I've been finding her cutesy schtick a bit grating. Maybe it's just that I felt sorry for Torres having to wear that hideous blue vest that she knitted--I mean, if you want to knit gifts for people, fine, but don't demand that they wear it to work and act all hurt when when they don't. (To be fair, I thought Quinn's sweater was cool.) I don't know, maybe I'm just a grumpypants who's overreacting to a bit of comedy, but it rubbed me the wrong way. After 14 years, the cute goth girl act is getting a little old for me.

Bull: And since we're talking about Michael Weatherly, I thought I might as well mention Bull. It's okay--I actually liked it more than I thought I would, and find it entertaining though not very plausible, despite being based on a real person. It's a little too pat that he always manages to win his cases, and not only get his client off the hook, but prove who the real culprit was. OTOH, it appeals to me in a wish-fulfillment way, since we know that justice isn't always served in real life. So far it's on my "nice to watch if I have time" list, but not a must-see.

NCIS: New Orleans: I'm really, really sad that Brodie was written off the show--I guess I missed the news that the actress who plays her would not be returning. I'm still on the fence about the FBI agent, Gregorio, who's taking her place. I didn't like her very much in the first couple of episodes, but that's mostly because she was set up as an antagonist to Pride's team. Now that they're working together, she's more likeable, but I'm still not completely sold. Just have to wait and see if she'll grow on me, I guess.

NCIS: LA: No character/actor changes, which is a relief compared to the other NCIS shows, and this one continues to be just fine for me. Although now I'm worried because the latest episode reveals that Granger is seriously (implied terminally) ill. I really like the character and the actor, so I'm worried they'll have him die by the end of the season, though I'm hoping for a miracle cure.

Scorpion: This show does the "team of misfits finds a family in each other" thing well, but sucks at handling romance. In Season 3, they're still dragging out the "will they or won't they get together" thing between Paige and Walter, and I'm even more unhappy with the relationship between Toby and Happy. I've always found Toby to be a little annoying, but it was tolerable when he and Happy were just friends. Now that they're together, I find him overbearing and insufferable. I can't stand his pushiness: when they were friends, he wanted to be lovers and kept pursuing a relationship despite her reluctance, and when they finally became a couple, he very quickly decided to propose marriage. And once Happy became pregnant he became so controlling and overprotective that I couldn't believe that she wouldn't kick his ass (though to be fair, she threatened to). Some advice from Paige helped him realize that he'd gone overboard with his concern for Happy and the baby, so thankfully he's backed off some, but I'm still annoyed by it, and by the sudden introduction of "We must get married because of the baby, but oh noes, Happy secretly married Walter years ago to help him get his green card, so we have to get divorced before the baby's born!"

That whole plot came out of nowhere, because I had assumed Walter was a US citizen by now even though I knew he'd been born in Ireland. He and his sister seemed Americanized and seemed like they'd been living in the US for most of their lives, and no mention was ever made of him not being a citizen until now. At Toby's insistence, Walter is trying to get his citizenship expedited even though it will put the fake marriage under scrutiny, because apparently none of these geniuses has the foresight to realize that Scorpion will fall apart if Walter is deported. Argh, so annoying! And frustrating, because I continue to enjoy the teamwork/friendship and Ralph continues to be adorable, but I'm not sure I can keep watching if the Toby/Happy/greencard stuff drags out much longer.
