Justice League
I went to see Justice League with some friends yesterday. I heard that it had bad reviews, but I liked it a lot! It wasn't perfect, but I liked the characters and it was fun to watch. My spoilery impressions follow below the cut...
It was not as good as Wonder Woman (which I think I never reviewed, but that movie was awesome!), but it was still very enjoyable. (Though I think I would still rank it below most of the MCU movies.) My friends and I agreed that it was both lighter in tone, and (literally) lighter in visual terms, in contrast to the grimdark feel that Zack Snyder's previous films in the DC universe have had. Friend A thinks it can probably be attributed to Joss Whedon taking over after Snyder had to step down due to the death of his daughter, although obviously that was an incredibly tragic event that we would not wish on anyone, regardless of whether we like his movies or not.
Getting back to the movie, we all agreed that we enjoyed it more than Man of Steel (which my friend refers to as "the emo Superman movie") and Batman vs. Superman. (Side comment: I thought Ben Affleck made a good Batman and I absolutely loved Jeremy Irons as Alfred, but B vs S was way too grimdark for me to enjoy until almost the end, where Batman and Superman finally join forces.) This movie had a much more hopeful mood, and really, Superman is all about hope, which is why grimdark/emo Superman in the previous movies did not work for my friends and me.
It was great to see the Amazons again, although it was painful to see them so badly outgunned, watching them fight Steppenwolf and his minions with arrows and spears. And I loved all the new Justice League characters, although my friends and I agreed that their introductions felt a little rushed--a side effect, I suppose, of having to introduce so many new characters in one film. I'm not that familiar with the DC universe, so I was taken by surprise by Aquaman's backstory--I had always thought he was the King of Atlantis and lived under the sea his whole life, but apparently he is half-human and was abandoned by his mother (supposedly for his own good). That came out of the blue for me and Friend B, but Friend A says it was that way in the comics too. And whoa--Jason Momoa was totally hot!
I loved Ezra Miller as Barry/Flash, and was charmed by his geeky humor. Of course, I am biased because I also loved him in Fantastic Beasts, but my friends thought he was good, too. Also loved Victor/Cyborg, but since I had never heard of the Cyborg character before, I was a bit confused when Victor first appeared, wondering if he was supposed to be Victor Von Doom until I realized I was getting my comic universes mixed up! (Doom being Marvel rather than DC.)
So overall, a good movie! I loved the team interactions, and it left me looking forward to the next Justice League movie (I assume there will be a sequel?) as well as the Wonder Woman sequel and the upcoming Aquaman movie--I'm really interested in seeingArthur/Aquaman's backstory fleshed out.
