FIC: Family Ties, Be the First Challenge
Once again, I've taken part in the Be the First challenge, which is as it sounds, a challenge to write the first story for a fandom that doesn't have any fanfic written for it yet. It's a great opportunity to promote and write for your favorite fandom-of-one! This year, I decided to write for the J-drama Kounodori (Dr. Storks) about a kindhearted obstetrician who moonlights as a pianist under the stage name 'Baby'.

Summary: Kounodori Sakura grew up in an orphanage, never knowing his father. Now working as an obstetrician at Persona Hospital, he discovers that one of his patients has an unexpected tie to his past.
I love the Kounodori drama, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to write fic for it! At the end of Season 1, Kounodori learns about how his parents met, and has the opportunity to seek out his father, but declines, saying that it's not necessary. Kounodori is content with the family he has--his foster mother at the orphanage and his friends at the hospital--and while I love that sense of found family, part of me also wanted to know what would happen if/when he met his father. Would his father be happy to see him? Or would his father reject him, fearing that his marriage would be jeopardized by an illegitimate son turning up out of the blue?
So I had an idea that one of Kounodori's patients would turn out to be his half-sister, and would unexpectedly meet his father that way. I was going to make the father and his family OCs, but then I remembered that in Haru wo Daiteita, Katou's sister Youko was hospitalized after nearly losing her baby. And then I thought, "Hmm, what if Youko was Kounodori's half-sister?" So the story ended up being a sort-of crossover with Harudaki, although I didn't tag it as such, since Iwaki and Katou don't appear in the story and the focus is on the Kounodori storyline.
I've always liked Youko, and I've always wanted to see more of her husband Keita (who seems pretty chill about dealing with all her family drama), so I had a lot of fun being able to play with their characters and develop them a bit more. I really would like to write a sequel in which Katou gets to meet Kounodori--I think Katou would be mad at his father at first, but that he wouldn't blame Kounodori for that, and when he calmed down, he would really like Kounodori and wholeheartedly accept him as a brother. And the gentle, easygoing Kounodori would be a bit overwhelmed at first by his two rambunctious new siblings, not to mention brother-in-law Iwaki, but that he'd be able to roll with the craziness and be happy to become a part of the Katou family. After all, this is the same guy who secretly performs in a wig and makeup under a stage name, so when you think about it, he's a part of the crazy showbiz world himself, albeit on a smaller scale!
I do feel a little bad about having made Katou's dad cheat on his wife in the past--I'm sure that didn't happen in canon, so I'm sorry, Katou-senior! But since Kounodori wouldn't have been born without the affair, the loss of the first Yousuke did provide a plausible rift to develop between Hiroshi and Mieko.
(Btw, I had to do some canon review to find out Katou's parents' given names, and Youko's married surname. I thought I would have to make something up, but after re-reading volumes 2-6, I was able to find everyone's canonical names!)
