FIC: How This Not-So-Little Pig Learned to Read, Be the First Challenge
As usual, I took part in the annual Be the First challenge for writing in fandoms that don't have any fanfic yet. This year, I wrote a story for the children's book series Thundercluck! by Paul Tillery IV. It's a delightfully silly series about a chicken named Thundercluck who has the powers of Thor due to his mother being accidentally zapped by Thor's lightning bolt before he was born. Thundercluck has a best friend, the young Valkyrie Brunhilde, and together they go on adventures and fight the evil Under-Cook Gorman Bones. My story is about Gorman's dim-witted but loveable henchman (or perhaps I should say "henchpig") War-Tog.
How This Not-So-Little Pig Learned to Read (and Made a Friend in the Process) (4164 words) by geri_chan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Thundercluck! Series - Paul Tillery IV
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: War-Tog, The Book Wyrm
Additional Tags: Friendship, Humor, POV Minor Character
Summary: War-Tog has always been content to be a henchman of the evil Under-Cook, Gorman Bones. But things begin to change when Brunhilde urges him to think for himself...
Notes: This story takes place during and after the second book, Recipe for Revenge. Check out the Thundercluck website for more info about the books, along with a book trailer and the short film that inspired the series.
War-Tog is more of a standard henchman in the first book, but he's very funny and you get the sense that he's not so bad in comparison to his boss. He really gets some great character development in the second book, where we see that he's actually a pretty nice and loveable man-pig when he isn't following his boss's orders. I found myself touched by his devotion to "Mr. Boss," who is totally undeserving and unappreciative of it, and I felt so sad for him when he was cast off by Bones and Medda. I found myself hoping that he will make some real friends and team up with Thundercluck and Brunhilde in the next book, but in the meantime, this story was my wish fulfillment.
You should absolutely check out the Thundercluck website, because it has a really charming animated book trailer and short film about Thundercluck. It would make a great animated series, and it would also make a great crack-tastic crossover with the MCU series! Can you imagine Chris Hemsworth's Thor being rescued by a lightning-wielding chicken and an adolescent Valkyrie? :D
