Fic: The Story of Chirp

As usual, this is late, but here is the fic I wrote for the annual Be the First challenge for writing in fandoms that don't have any fanfic yet:

The Story of Chirp (2229 words) by geri_chan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dungeon Critters - Natalie Riess & Sara Goetter
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Goro (Dungeon Critters), Juniper Fletcher (Dungeon Critters), Prince Chirp (Dungeon Critters), Rose Reverie (Dungeon Critters)
Additional Tags: Friendship, Family
Summary: The other Dungeon Critters finally learn the story of how Chirp came to be born into a family of bears.

I requested this for Yuletide last year, but since no one picked it up, that gave me the perfect opportunity to use it for Be the First since I had a plot bunny eating my brain. I was initially interested in the romance between Goro and Horseboy, but got sidetracked wondering whether Chirp was really adopted or not.

To back up for those not familiar with the graphic novel: the Dungeon Critters are a bunch of anthropomorphic animals who are Dungeons & Dragons style adventurers who are kind and well-meaning but still end up unintentionally (and humorously) causing mayhem wherever they go. Their leader Chirp is a frog and a prince (though female, she's called a prince and not a princess) whose parents are bears. When one of her friends assumes she is adopted, she indignantly says that she's not adopted and can't you see the family resemblance?

There is magic in this world, so it's possible, I suppose...but I have spent way too much time wondering how Chirp's parents ended up with a frog daughter, and my brain just would not let the idea go. So I came up with a fairy tale style solution that works for me--not exactly born into the family but not exactly adopted either. Read and find out! You can follow the story without knowing the canon, but the graphic novel is charming and hilarious, so I highly recommend checking it out if you can.

Also, there is a Be the First flash round coming up soon in September if you have a fandom you want to write for and get a little head start. (The idea is that we'll have a shorter period of time to write, I think it's supposed to be two weeks.) Any length from drabble to epic length story is fine.
