Her childhood friend and longtime rival, Professor Doctor Cecilia Choi, is determined to find out what happened to her...but the truth might be stranger than they ever imagined.

Posting this belatedly, but here is my entry for this year's Be the First fest. I fell in love with this wonderful and whimsical graphic novel, and I knew once I finished it that I wanted to write about it for Be the First this year.

It's an adventure/fantasy story about a young girl named Safia who is orphaned and goes to live with her aunt, the formerly renowned explorer Lady Whimsy, who is now living in seclusion after being cursed during one of her expeditions. Because she is blind, Safia doesn't realize that her aunt was cursed into the form of a (humanoid) monster. She quickly grows to love her eccentric aunt, and lives happily with Whimsy and Whimsy's assistant/former nanny Cathryn, the only person who knows Whimsy's secret. All is well, though Safia dreams a bit wistfully about going on an adventure of her own one day.

She unexpectedly gets that opportunity when Aunt Whimsy's longtime rival, Cecilia Choi, has led another expedition to the ruins where Whimsy was cursed, and Whimsy, Cathryn, and Safia must go to there to prevent disaster from striking again.

I say "rival," but that seems to be one-sided on Whimsy's part. When we actually see Cecilia, they (Cecilia is nonbinary) actually seem quite smitten with Whimsy in the flashback scene of their childhood, and concerned about Whimsy in the present, and Cathryn refers to them as a friend.

I was intrigued by the difference in perspective, and charmed by Whimsy's nickname for Cecilia ("Pineapple Tart" due to Cecilia's love for that pastry), and I decided I wanted to write a story about the adventure from Cecilia's point of view.

I also love that the book has a very diverse cast. In the author's own words: "Mostly all-female (and 1 non-binary) cast, mostly POC, & strange and wondrous." You can see them on her blog post here.

I have written the story so that it can be read canon-blind, but I would highly recommend checking out the graphic novel if you get a chance!
