FIC: Not Your Typical Cinderella Story
Forgot to post this earlier--this was my entry for the Be the First flash round back in September:
Not Your Typical Cinderella Story (5969 words) by geri_chan
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: My Stepmother and Stepsisters Aren't Wicked
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Nakamura Miya, Nakamura Yasu, Kounokura Teru
Additional Tags: Family, Step-parents, Step-siblings, Family Bonding
Summary: Miya, an illegitimate daughter of the Kounokura family, goes to live with her stepmother and stepsisters after her mother dies. She expects to be mistreated, but to her surprise, they all seem determined to love and protect her.
Just as she is beginning to settle into her new family, Miya's grandmother shows up, threatening to take her back. Will Miya have to give up her newfound happiness? Not if stepmother Teru and her daughters can help it!

This fic is for a manga series that is a humorous twist on the Cinderella story: Miya goes to live with her stepmother and stepsisters after her mother dies, expecting to be reviled by them and treated like a servant, but instead they adore her and just want to dote on their new daughter/sister. The stepfamily is drawn as scary-looking and they say things that sound menacing at first, but actually turn out to be sweet and protective. As the book reviews on Amazon say, the gag is a bit repetitive, but I never tire of the combination of hilarity and warm fuzzy family feels. And there is a bit of growth and character development in the second volume, where Miya has grown more secure in her new family's love, and her fear is now that she might disgrace them with her lack of noble etiquette, though as always, they are quick to reassure her that everything will be fine. (There's also some interesting backstories about the stepfamily and the servants.)
I tried to include the humorous and sentimental tone of the manga, while tackling a slightly more serious storyline, based on the chapter where Miya's maternal grandmother shows up wanting to take her back, possibly to be put to work as an indentured servant--an interesting twist where it's the biological family member who is the threat while the stepfamily is determined to protect our Cinderella.
The manga is told from Miya's POV, so my story was an attempt to understand what was going through the grandmother's mind when she was contemplating selling her grandchild into servitude. (It's not actually confirmed, but pretty strongly implied that she was going to do it if the stepmother hadn't interfered.)
The fic can be read canon-blind, but I highly encourage everyone to check out the manga if you can.
