FIC: Dorrie and the Kidnapped Cat
Slightly belated, I'm posting my entry for this year's Be the First fest:
Dorrie and the Kidnapped Cat (4578 words) by geri_chan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dorrie the Little Witch Series - Patricia Coombs
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Dorrie (Dorrie the Little Witch Series), Gink (Dorrie the Little Witch Series)
Additional Tags: Friendship, Magic
Summary: Dorrie and Gink encounter an old foe and a cat in need of rescue.
Several years ago, someone nominated the Dorrie the Little Witch children's book series for Yuletide, which was one of my favorites when I was growing up, and it brought back a lot of fond memories. I still remember Dorrie and her black cat Gink, and how her socks never match, and how she's always (unintentionally) getting into mischief, but somehow either she or her mother, the Big Witch, always manages to save the day.
So that year I offered to write for Dorrie but didn't match on it, and it hasn't been nominated again since. But still, a plot bunny kept percolating in the back of my mind over the years, about Dorrie and Gink rescuing a kidnapped princess cat. So when the Be the First rolled around this year, I finally decided to write it.
I had a great time re-reading some of the Dorrie books to refresh my memory, and I really enjoyed writing my own Dorrie adventure, giving Gink a bit more of the spotlight than he usually gets in the books.
I didn't work it into this story, but I did notice (and I recently read a review which concurs) that it's interesting, especially considering the time when the books were written, that Dorrie is being raised by a single mother (the Big Witch) with no mention of a father, and it's never explained or remarked upon as unusual in the books. Which is great, but it did make me wonder as an adult--I never really thought about it as a kid--about the worldbuilding in Dorrie's universe. There are male witches and wizards in the story--so is Dorrie's father absent or deceased? Or is it the norm for (female) witches to raise their children alone? There are other witch children in the books, but without re-reading all of them, I don't recall if it's ever mentioned whether they come from one parent or two parent homes.
Perhaps that's a story for another day, though it will have to be posted outside of the fest, since there's no Be the Second challenge! ^_^
