Three Be the First fics

I only just realized that I never posted about my last few Be the First fics, so here they are::

Octicorn Makes a Friend (4133 words) by geri_chan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Octicorn Series - Kevin Diller & Justin Lowe, Nerdycorn - Andrew Root
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Octicorn, Fern (Nerdycorn)
Additional Tags: Friendship
Summary: Being half-unicorn and half-octopus, Octicorn feels like he doesn't fit in with either side. Then one day, he meets a unicorn who also is left out by the in-crowd...

This is a crossover between two picture books that feature a unicorn (or a half-unicorn) who is a bit of an outcast and doesn't fit in. I first read the Octicorn book and loved the story of the sweet half-octopus/half-unicorn who just wants to make a friend. I originally wanted to cross it over with the Phoebe and Her Unicorn comics/graphic novels and have Octi be a cousin of Marigold, and eventually become friends with Phoebe and Marigold at a unicorn family reunion.

However, since there are already stories on AO3 for the Phoebe series, that wouldn't work for Be the First, so I decided to have Octi's first friend be Fern from the Nerdycorn book, which similar to the Phoebe series, has unicorns who are beautiful and glamorous but somewhat shallow and self-centered. And I did keep the family background by having Octi's dad being related to Marigold and having the "Nostrils" surname.

I really enjoyed writing about Octi and Fern, who are quite different in temperament, and have them be able to become friends and appreciate each other's differences--and eventually have the other unicorns learn to appreciate them, too.

Love and Fried Rice (6138 words) by geri_chan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Kamogawa Food Detectives Series - Hisashi Kashiwai
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Hatsuko Shirasaki/Keita Kakuzawa
Characters: Koishi Kamogawa, Nagare Kamogawa, Hatsuko Shirasaki, Keita Kakuzawa
Additional Tags: Family, Food
Summary: Hatsuko Shirasaki appears to have it all: a life as a glamorous fashion model, and a rich and handsome fiance, Keita Kakuzawa. But before she can marry him, she must reveal a secret she's been hiding about her childhood...
Fortunately, the Kamogawa Detective Agency is ready to help her find a fried rice recipe that might help her come to terms with her past so that she can have a future together with Keita.

I love all the stories in the Kamogawa Food Detectives series, but Hatsuko's is the one that stuck with me the most. It ends with Hatsuko finding closure with her past when Nagare is able to recreate the fried rice dish from her childhood, but we don't find out what happens when she tells her fiancé the truth. We're left with an optimistic feeling, but we don't know for sure, and I really wanted to see Hatsuko get her happy ending, so that's why I decided to write this story.

I also enjoyed writing about Keita, who is only mentioned in the story but doesn't actually appear. I wanted him to be a guy who is worthy of Hatsuko's love, and someone she would care about enough to confront the past that she has tried to leave behind.

Cherry Blossoms and Memories (3129 words) by geri_chan
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: 八雲さんは餌づけがしたい | Yakumo-san wa Eduke ga Shitai | Beauty and the Feast
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Yakumo Shuko/Yamato Shohei
Characters: Yakumo Shuko, Yamato Shohei
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Pre-Relationship
Summary: Yamato Shohei is returning to his alma mater to coach baseball, and is looking forward to seeing Yakumo-san again--and is hoping their friendship can finally turn into something more romantic. But when she calls to say that she's sick, all he wants is to take care of her and make sure she's all right.

I really loved the manga--I'm fond of foodie manga/anime, and I loved the mouth-watering food descriptions, but I also loved the friendship that develops between Yakumo and Yamato. I don't ship them as adult/teenager during the canonical timelime, but I do like the idea of them getting together in the future after Yamato is an adult. It's hinted in the final chapter of the last volume that something might happen, after Yamato has graduated from high school and become a pro baseball player, but their potential romantic dinner is interrupted by their friends and Yamato's little sister. It still ends on a positive note, since they're still happy to enjoy a meal together with everyone, but their relationship is left open-ended.

Which is fine, since not everyone ships the age-gap couple, and it leaves things free for both the shippers and the non-shippers to imagine that things will work out the way they want, whether that's romantic or platonic. But since I do ship them, I wanted to imagine what it might be like for them to take that first step towards becoming a couple. I originally was planning to write about their first date, but I liked the idea of Yamato being the one to look after Yakumo and cook for her for a change, so that was what I ended up writing about.
