FIC: Valentine's Day Surprise
Here's a slightly late Valentine's Day present for Katou and Iwaki! I got bunnied with a Valentine's idea when I was working on "Going Steady," and just had to finish it and post it at least close to Valentine's Day. But don't worry, "Going Steady" is finished; I just need to proofread it and polish it up a bit before posting! ^_^
Title: Valentine's Day Surprise
Rating: R
Fandom: Haru wo Daiteita (Embracing Love)
Pairing: Iwaki/Katou
Characters: Iwaki, Katou, Miyasaka, Onozuka, Shimizu
Word count: ~2,060
Disclaimer: No money is being made off this story; consider it a little wish fulfillment on my part.
Prequel to: Comeback (Part 1 and Part 2)
Summary: Katou decides to make homemade chocolate for Iwaki on Valentine's Day.
Author's note: This is set in my Kikuchi/Onozuka series, which I've collected together under the tag "comeback series," named after the first fic in the series. I set the story in this series because I wanted to use the history I invented for Onozuka, of him belonging to a family of famous confectioners. However, it takes place prior to Onozuka and Kikuchi's first meeting in Part 2 of "Comeback".
***
"What kind of chocolate should I get Iwaki-san for Valentine's Day?" Katou asked Miyasaka and Onozuka as the three of them were hanging out together at a bar one night.
"Why do you have to get him anything?" Miyasaka asked. "Valentine's Day is for women to give men chocolate." He grinned and said, "Does that mean that you're the wife in this marriage? I always thought that was Iwaki-san's role."
"Idiot!" Katou growled, smacking him hard on the back of his head as Miyasaka yelped in protest. "Neither of us is the woman in the relationship! I love Iwaki-san for himself, including his manliness. I don't want him to be a woman, nor does he want me to be one."
"Didn't you learn anything, Miya-chan?" Onozuka sighed with an air of weary patience, like a parent who'd had to explain the obvious to a dimwitted child one too many times. "I thought that Iwaki-san's performance at my place proved to you that they're both equal partners in their marriage."
"I was only joking," Miyasaka said sullenly, rubbing the back of his head. "But wouldn't it be more appropriate to get him something for White Day?"
"But White Day is for men to give return gifts to the women who gave them chocolate on Valentine's Day," Onozuka pointed out. "So if Katou sticks strictly to the rules, no one will get any chocolate or gifts, since there are no women in their relationship."
"That's why I figured that I should take the initiative!" Katou said brightly. "I wanted to surprise Iwaki-san with a romantic gift, but I've never bought chocolate for a guy before."
"Hmm," Onozuka mused. "You could go out and buy some expensive candy, but women seem to think that making homemade chocolates shows the true depth of your feelings."
"You must get a lot of homemade chocolates, huh, your Highness?" Katou joked, referring to a magazine article that had given Onozuka the nickname "Golden Prince" for his blond hair and good looks. Ever since then, Katou and Miyasaka had been teasing him about his princely image.
"Actually, Valentine's Day is a pain in the ass," Onozuka complained. "I always get more chocolate than I can eat, and it's a hassle to have to reciprocate on White Day. Of course, I'm not expected to provide return gifts for the chocolate that I receive as fan mail, but every year I get stuff from the women who work at the agency, and actresses that I've worked with in the past. It's a hassle to have to buy them all gifts on White Day--not to mention that it gets to be expensive."
"You're so cold, Onozuka!" Miyasaka scolded. "Those poor women are expressing their affection to you, and you act like it's a nuisance. You should be happy that you're so popular!"
"It is a nuisance," Onozuka insisted. "Of course I'm polite to the women, but I didn't ask them for the gifts, and it's a burden to me. It would be different if it was from someone I was dating, but since I have no relationship with these women other than a professional one, isn't it sort of rude of them to force their feelings on me?"
"You don't have to be so stuck-up," Katou said disapprovingly. "Even if you don't feel the same way, you shouldn't belittle the feelings of someone who likes you. Besides, if they're women that you work with, maybe they're just giving you giri-choco out of obligation."
"It's not just duty-chocolate," Miyasaka said with a grin. "All the women swoon over him; they're deceived by his princely image, because they don't know the real Onozuka like we do. As for me, I appreciate all the chocolate that I get, and I'm happy to express my appreciation in return."
"Anyway, never mind about that," Katou said impatiently. "What about my gift for Iwaki-san? What kind of chocolates should I make for him, Onozuka?"
"Why are you asking me?" Onozuka snapped in a defensive voice. "Do I look like a candy-making expert or something?"
"Gee, you don't have to bite my head off," Katou replied, looking a little hurt. "I was just asking since you were the one who brought up the idea in the first place."
"Oh yeah," Onozuka said sheepishly. "Have you ever made candy before?"
"No," Katou replied. "I cook dinner sometimes, but I usually buy dessert. Actually, we don't really eat that many sweets, since Iwaki-san and I have to watch our figures." He grinned playfully, then sighed and said, "Although Iwaki-san would be beautiful at any weight."
"Don't go getting all sappy on us now," Onozuka warned. "Since you're a beginner, it would probably be best to make something simple that you don't have to worry about molding or shaping. Maybe something like brownies or fudge, that you can just pour into a pan."
"No heart-shaped chocolates or hand-molded truffles?" Katou asked wistfully.
"You want it to come out edible, don't you?" Onozuka retorted. "Besides, it's the thought that counts. I'm sure that Iwaki-san will be happy that you made something special for him, and if this works out, maybe you can try something more fancy next year, after you've had more time to practice."
"Yeah, you're right, Onozuka," Katou agreed. "So where can I find a fudge recipe?"
"I'm sure that you can find something on the internet," Onozuka said dismissively, sounding bored. "Can we talk about something other than candy and Valentine's Day now?"
"You're just jealous because you don't have someone special waiting for you at home, like my Iwaki-san," Katou said smugly.
"You don't have to rub it in, Katou," Miyasaka whined.
Onozuka snorted in derision. "Iwaki-san isn't my type, and I'm not interested in having a serious relationship right now. It's too much damned trouble, and I need to focus on my career, since some of us aren't big movie stars like you."
"Someday you'll fall head-over-heels in love, and then you'll understand," Katou predicted.
Onozuka snorted again and scoffed, "That'll be the day!"
"Yeah, and I'll laugh my ass off when it happens," Miyasaka snickered, and Onozuka glared at him, then hit him on the exact same spot that Katou had.
"Ow!"

On their way home from the TV studio where Iwaki had been filming, Shimizu asked, "Do you mind if we stop by this candy shop up ahead, Iwaki-san? I need to pick up some chocolate for my husband."
"Ah, that's right; it's Valentine's Day tomorrow," Iwaki said with a smile. "Of course I don't mind."
Shimizu pulled into the parking lot and asked, "Do you want to come inside with me?"
"I can just wait in the car," Iwaki replied. "You're not planning to be in there long, are you?"
"But don't you need to get something for Katou-san, too?" Shimizu teased.
Iwaki blushed and protested, "But we're not women! We don't need to buy each other chocolate!"
"That may be so," Shimizu replied. "But don't you think that Katou-san is probably going to buy something for you?"
Iwaki groaned; that romantic idiot probably was going to get him a big box of chocolates, or something else equally foolish, which meant that his feelings would be hurt if Iwaki didn't get him at least a token gift in return.
"All right," he grumbled, unbuckling his seat belt. "I suppose I had better get him something so that he doesn't sulk about it all night if I show up empty-handed."
Shimizu just smiled, not fooled by Iwaki's gruff complaints. In his own way, he was just as romantic as Katou; he just hid it better. "The two of you make such a lovely couple," she said cheerfully, and Iwaki's face grew even redder.

On Valentine's Day, Onozuka received a call on his cell phone. He glanced at the screen and saw that it was from Katou, then answered, "What's up?"
"It won't get hard!" Katou wailed frantically.
"Eh?!" Onozuka exclaimed in surprise. "I didn't think that you had any problems in that department, but there are pills to take care of that sort of thing. Shouldn't you be calling your doctor instead of me?"
"I'm talking about the fudge!" Katou said indignantly. "What the hell are you talking about?!"
Onozuka just laughed. "So what's the problem? It won't harden?"
"Yes, I've chilled it for two hours like the recipe said, but it's still all syrupy and not hard at all!"
Onozuka sighed, wondering how he'd managed to get stuck giving Katou candy-making advice. He didn't want anyone in his current life to learn about his connection to the Nakata family of confectioners--not that western sweets like fudge were his family's speciality, anyway.
"I think you must have added too much liquid, Katou," he said. "Didn't you follow the recipe?"
"I found one on the internet like you said, and printed it out, but the paper came out a little smudged," Katou replied. "I've been telling Iwaki-san that we need to get a new printer. Anyhow, I must have misread the amount of milk to put in."
"How much did you put in?"
"Um, two cans of condensed milk."
"That's way too much!" Onozuka scolded. "That's probably about twice what the recipe calls for. You might be able to salvage the fudge if you heat it up again and double the amounts of the other ingredients to balance it out."
"I don't have time to start over again!" Katou wailed. "Iwaki-san will be home any minute now!"
Onozuka sighed again. He was really getting tired of Katou's and Miyasaka's Iwaki-obsessions, but he was a good friend, so he took pity on Katou.
"All is not lost yet," he told Katou. "I have an idea..."
***
Iwaki arrived home and found a trail of rose petals leading from the front door all the way into the bedroom. He smiled and shook his head, thinking to himself that Katou must have gone all-out this year, and he wondered if he should have bought something more than the heart-shaped box of chocolates he was carrying.
As he passed by the kitchen, he noticed several brown-smeared pots and pans soaking in the sink, and shook his head again. Trust Katou to make such a big mess during his Valentine's Day preparations! But still, he was secretly touched that Katou had gone to the trouble of making homemade chocolates for him.
"I'm home," he called out as he stepped into the bedroom, and then his jaw dropped as he stared in shock at Katou, who lay sprawled across the bed naked, with melted chocolate coating his nipples and erect penis, and the words "I love you, Iwaki-san!" were written across his chest and belly in chocolate.
"Happy Valentine's Day, Iwaki-san!" Katou said, smiling at him widely, and Iwaki burst into laughter. "Does that mean that you like your present?" he asked uncertainly.
"I like it very much," Iwaki assured him. He held up the box of chocolates and added, "I got you a present, too, but I'm afraid that it's not as, ah, creative as yours."
"Ooh, I'm so happy that Iwaki-san got me a present!" Katou exclaimed, looking genuinely thrilled with the gift. "But I think that Iwaki-san should come and enjoy his present first."
"I won't argue with you about that," Iwaki chuckled as he set the box of chocolates aside and began to undress.
***
Later, as Iwaki was licking every last bit of chocolate off Katou's body, Katou grinned and thought to himself, I really must remember to thank Onozuka!
***
Meanwhile, at Miyasaka's apartment in Meguro, Miyasaka and Onozuka were comparing their Valentine's Day haul, and Miyasaka pouted when his pile of gifts turned out to be marginally smaller than Onozuka's.
"As far as I'm concerned, you can have it all," Onozuka said, pushing the pile of chocolates towards his friend, and then he suddenly sneezed.
"Someone must be talking about you," Miyasaka said with a grin. "Maybe one of those poor broken-hearted women whose Valentine's Day gift you scorned."
Onozuka sniffled and said sourly, "Valentine's Day is a pain in the ass!"
THE END.
Next story in the series: Comeback, Part 1

Afterword: In Japan, it's traditional for women to give men chocolate on Valentine's Day; men are supposed to reciprocate the following month on White Day. Women are supposed to give chocolate to the men they like, but they also give out "giri-choco" or "obligation chocolate" as non-romantic gifts to people like male bosses and coworkers.
And there's a saying in Japan, that if you sneeze, it means that someone's talking about you.

The manga is now out of print, but there's an anime dvd available that covers the storyline from the first two books, and provides a good intro to the story:
http://www.animenation.com/kvdvd-0820.html
Basically, the 2 main characters, Iwaki and Katou, are porn stars who get the chance to star in a TV show playing male porn stars who fall in love with each other, and naturally, they begin to fall in love for real, although Iwaki initially resists his attraction to another man. Kikuchi is a famous movie star who was driven out of the country ten years ago due to a gay scandal. He lived in the US for a decade, then returns to make a comeback starring in a movie with Katou, but he is jealous of Katou and Iwaki's success and tries to come between them.
I expand on Kikuchi's character in my series, and hook him up with Onozuka, an actor friend of Katou's, who appears in the later volumes of the manga. If you like my fics, I would suggest joing the youka_nitta LJ community so that you can download the manga scanalations.

And leave it to Onozuka to come up with creative use of ruined recipes...

Now that I think about it, I remember reading a Snupin story where Lupin painted Snape with melted chocolate--that might have been where the idea originally came from. "It won't get hard!" is all mine, though. *grins proudly*
