Trading Places
I'm so excited about the Trading Places challenge on
lupin_snape[Unknown site tag] that I just had to squee about it a little bit! I've been afraid to enter challenges and fests in the past, because I'm not that good at working on a deadline, and I'm usually really bad at writing for prompts. I find it hard to work off someone else's idea; I'm more the "I can't write till the inspiration hits me" type. Which is why I didn't sign up for Snupin Santa, because I would feel horrible if I couldn't finish someone's gift in time, or if I came up with something crappy.
(Oops, I guess maybe I should clarify for my non-Snupin friends that Trading Places is a challenge where authors can write a story for an artist's picture, and artists can illustrate a writer's fic.)
Resuming my babbling...I think that hanging out on the lupin_snape communities on LJ and IJ has been good; it's exposed me to a lot of different types of fic, caused me to read things outside my comfort zone, and it's given me an idea of how other writers approach these challenges. And
snapedom has allowed me to test the waters of writing for prompts without too much pressure. A question about Snape's height inspired the silly fic "A Man of Stature", and I wrote a short fic excerpt for Snapedom's November challenge, "The Great Snape Escape," in which we were encouraged to write a happier ending for our favorite Potions Master. And for this week, we're being encouraged to write ficlets, make art, post recipes, or otherwise celebrate Snape's birthday. I almost immediately got bitten by a plot bunny and finished a birthday fic in two days! I was so proud that I'd actually completed something for an official prompt. ^_^ (I will cross-post to lupin_snape and Snapedom on Jan. 9th.)
So now I feel up to actually tackling the Trading Places challenge, and I'm really excited. I took a look at the art that's being offered up, and I've already got very vivid plot bunnies for two pieces, a particular scene in mind for a third, and there are a few other pieces where I think I can probably come up with something. I was only planning on doing one to start with, but if I manage to get my first two choices, I'm pretty sure I can finish both by the deadline. I don't want to be greedy and bite off more than I can chew, so I'll wait till they're completed before going back for a third. ^_^ I can't wait for sign-ups--I hope I get my first picks, but even if I don't, there's lots of great art available, so I'm sure I can find something to inspire me. And I'm so taken with those plot bunnies that I may end up writing them anyway even I don't get them for the challenge--with the artists' permission, of course, after the challenge is over.
(Sorry to be all mysterious about which pieces of art I'm talking about, but I don't want to seem like I'm trying to lay claim to anything before the official sign-up.)
And of course I think it would be really cool to have artwork done for one or more of my stories! Although I felt a bit hesitant about offering up stories from my "Always" series since it's so long, but I haven't written many short pieces. So hopefully some of the artists are familiar with it already, or don't mind reading a long story. I've listed "Always," because that's my favorite piece, its sequel "Summer Vacation," which is shorter and can probably be understood without having read the first story, and a short stand-alone story, "Mirror, Mirror". And they all have enough visual imagery (I hope!) to inspire an artist.
I'm also familiar with some of the other authors' and artists' work, and I can't wait to see some of those stories illustrated or illustrations turned into stories!
Thanks for listening to me babble, and check out the challenge if you haven't heard about it yet! Some of my Snapedom friends might find it interesting even if Snupin isn't their OTP.
