Well, it is almost over, but April is National Poetry Month. I mostly read fiction (and mostly SFF with the occasional mystery and romance) and manga, but I decided to branch out a bit this month and read some poetry. So here's what I've been reading:

I haven't been posting much--partly due to RL, and partly due to computer problems (now resolved), and I ended up missing National Blog Posting Month. It was tough having my computer start dying on me when I needed to be writing my Yuletide fic!

But the computer is working, my Yuletide fic was finished and uploaded, and I managed to get some holiday baking done. I even managed to do my annual re-watch of the Diagnosis Murder Christmas episode "Murder in the Family". (Despite the gruesome title, it's actually heartwarming and sappy in a good way, and I never get tired of watching Diagnosis Murder in general.)

I just wanted to wish a happy holiday to those of you on my F-list who are celebrating.

Merry Christmas to those of you who are celebrating the holidays! I had a nice Christmas morning with my family, and I also got two awesome Yuletide fics in the Burnt and Sweetness & Lightning fandoms! I'll write up a more detailed post about them in the next day or so.

Just a brief post today with a few of my favorite things to watch or listen to during the Christmas season.

I was expecting this to be a fun week, but there was some RL stuff that turned stressful and very much not fun, but things are thankfully beginning to get a little better so that the holidays won't totally suck. I did some shopping, watched the Great British Baking Show's Christmas Masterclass episodes while eating gingerbread, and got most of my Christmas presents wrapped. And I just checked my A03 page and saw that I have two Yuletide gifts waiting for me, which means that I got my present plus a treat! I am so stoked! I feel a little bad that I didn't have the time or energy to write treats this year, but hopefully can do a New Year's Resolution fic or two next year.

It's been a long day, so I thought I'd just share a quick link today, but it's a pretty nifty one. Found this article on Mugglenet about making your own chocolate frogs with an official candy mold from Cinereplicas. It even comes with a pretty DIY fold-up box to put the frogs in so that it looks like it came straight from Honeydukes. Check out the video in the article to see Mugglenet staffer Zoe trying out the mold and turning out some surprisingly professional-looking frogs.

Checking it out on Cinereplica's website, it looks like the mold costs about $20 (with 8 boxes included), but you can enter to win one for free (see the article for details). I know it sounds like I'm shilling for them, but I think it's pretty cool and I'm tempted to buy one myself even though I really don't need it. They have a lot of other HP merch, and I'm also trying to restrain myself from buying a $92 Slytherin robe that I would probably only wear on Halloween. (But it looks so cool and would go with the Slytherin tie and scarf that I already own!)

I had kind of a crappy day today, so I'm posting something that makes me smile: this Campbell's Soup commercial in which two kids who speak different languages discover that Wookie is a universal language.

Campbell's seems to do really well with making adorable Star Wars commercials: I also remember this older one in which two gay dads play Darth Vader while feeding their son.

Baking

I did some Christmas baking this weekend, and am currently trying to restrain myself (with limited success) from eating all the leftover cookies that I didn't give away. As you guys know if you've been reading my recent posts, I love watching baking competition shows. However, I know I would never be able to enter one of them because I'm way too lazy to do that much work. In general, kneading and/or rolling out dough is way more effort than I usually want to put in. I like making stuff like chocolate chip cookies where you can just dump spoonfuls of dough on the cookie sheet and be done with it. Or even better, bar cookies or brownies where you just dump all the dough in a pan in one go and cut them up after they're done! (Despite my laziness, the end products do turn out tasty, if not especially pretty.)

I got busy and kind of forgot about posting until the day (or rather, night) was almost over. I am currently wrapping Christmas presents while watching an old Blue Bloods episode, and plan to do a little last-minute tinkering with my Yuletide fic, which I managed to finish (albeit shortly) before the deadline.

I'll hopefully get something more substantial posted tomorrow.

I watch a lot of crime procedurals, maybe too many judging by the weird dream I had the other night. The FBI (or maybe the police, but I feel like it was the FBI) were investigating a cult, and the lead agent looked like Hill Harper. Which is maybe not so surprising since I was just watching him on The Good Doctor recently, and he has played a CSI on CSI:NY and an FBI agent on Limitless. Anyway, the alleged cult appeared on the surface to be a hippie-dippy type group that seemed to preach enlightenment through meditation or something like that, but obviously Hill Harper thought they were covering up something sinister (although I don't know what the sinister thing was). Agent Harper and his team were in the cult's headquarters, and they entered a big room where everyone was sitting on the floor meditating. On the other end of the room was a door that was supposed to open up to some magical Shangri-La type paradise--maybe some fantasy/SF got mixed up in my crime show dream?

Well, this sucks. I was looking forward to watching The Great American Baking Show but ABC has decided to stop airing the show after judge Johnny Iuzzini was accused of sexual harassment by former employees. I realize that me not getting to see a TV show is pretty trivial in comparison, but I do feel really bad for the contestants. Filming of the series has already been completed, and presumably Iuzzini was already paid for his participation, so who really gets hurt most by this but the contestants? His reputation will take a hit and his career will probably suffer, but that would have happened anyway once the allegations were made public. But the contestants won't get to show off the bakes that they worked so hard on, and while ABC says the winner will be announced later, I expect it will probably just be a brief statement and they won't get their shining moment of glory.

I realize it's a difficult situation. It would insensitive to say the least if ABC continued to run the show as if nothing had happened, and it wouldn't be practical to edit Iuzzini's scenes out of the show since he's an integral part of it. But OTOH, the contestants are being punished for something that isn't their fault. I kind of wish that ABC had just put the episodes online for streaming and let viewers decide whether they want to watch the show or not.

I just noticed that NHK World has the Kazuo Ishiguro First Class lecture videos up on their website. They're repeats of previous episodes, but he's a great speaker and they were really interesting, and I thought it might be of renewed interest since he recently won the Nobel Prize for literature. I'm embarrassed to say that I still haven't gotten around to reading his books, but seeing the episodes reminded me to bump them up on my "to read" list.

The videos will be up until Dec. 24th.

Feeling a little better about HP fandom after listening to Mugglecast Episode# 348 in which the hosts discuss JKR's statement in a thoughtful and intelligent manner, pointing out the fallacy that someone who is a nice guy in public can't possibly be an abuser in private, and talking about how they and other fans feel disappointed and let down by JKR, especially since Harry had been abused by the Dursleys and that some fans who had been abused in real life had found comfort and support in the HP world. They also discussed the various ways (with no one particular way being the "right" way) in which they could protest Depp's casting, ranging from boycotting the movie to seeing the movie but donating the price of the ticket to a charity that supports women.
geri_chan: (Snape)
Recently JKR released a statement supporting the casting of Johnny Depp, who was alleged to have abused his ex-wife. Presumably referencing the divorce settlement that the two reached, JKR said: However, the agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people, both of whom have expressed a desire to get on with their lives, must be respected. Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies.

I almost forgot about posting tonight! So just a quick rec I got via a post on Aaron Williams's blog: a Ninja Batman anime! Batman (along with some of his friends and the Joker, apparently) get sent back in time to feudal Japan. Looks like a lot of fun!
geri_chan: (Puppy Love)
I've been on baking show roll lately--I was watching The Great British Baking Show Christmas Masterclass tonight! I generally don't care for fruitcake type things that much, but they made it look really delicious! It was also cool to see a Christmas pudding set alight--I've never had one, and while I suspect I'd like the Yule Log better, I'd like to try it once just to see what it's like. (Of course, I'm too lazy to make it myself, so likely I will just go on wondering what it tastes like.)

I need to get around to my own Christmas baking soon, which will probably be something much simpler--one or two kinds of cookies from scratch, and a gingerbread cake mix that I saw while shopping and couldn't resist.

Another follow-up on the audiobook I'm currently listening to, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. (My previous post is here.)

Honey Toast

Dec. 4th, 2017 09:10 pm

I went out with friends to a Japanese restaurant, and we had honey toast for dessert. I'd seen it on a TV cooking show before, but this was the first time I tried it and it was amazing! It's basically a half loaf of bread, with the inside carved out and cut into bite-sized squares, then both the hollowed crust and squares are buttered and toasted, then the squares carefully placed back into the crust, then drizzled with honey and topped with ice cream and sometimes fruit and/or sauces (the place we went to offered chocolate and caramel sauce). I cannot describe how good it was--I'm drooling just thinking about it, and I really want to go back there again!

This seems like it would be a pain to make at home, but if you want to try it, or just see how it's constructed, there's a recipe, photos, and a video here.

Btw, this is definitely a dessert to share unless you have a huge appetite--three of us split one and it was still pretty filling. Or just skip dinner and head straight to dessert!

Oops, I almost forgot to make today's post--[personal profile] lore  and I agreed that we would take up the challenge to continue Blog Posting Month through December!

Know why I forgot? Because I just spent about an hour playing Snoopy Pop--it's so addictive! I used to love playing Bust-a-Move, but since that app shut down, I've had a hard time finding a bubble game that I like as much. I've tried a few different ones, but they're too simple or I don't like the graphics or both. Snoopy and company are adorable (you rescue little Woodstocks being held captive in bubbles, or fight the Red Baron), and it's easy enough for kids to play while still adding enough obstacles to keep it challenging without being too frustrating as you go up in levels.

Haha, it sounds like I'm writing up an advertisement for the game, but I'm not sure I should rec it to you guys, since the game is a huge time suck! It's a lot of fun, but be warned that you might find yourself popping bubbles instead of working or cleaning or whatever it is you're actually supposed to be doing.

OK, I have quit the game and am going to get cracking on my Yuletide assignment, which has been chugging along steadily though a little more slowly than I'd like. But I'm excited about writing this fandom and these characters, and I love the prompt that my recip gave me, which made me look at them in a slightly different way, which is great. Also, I have a Yuletide gift already! I don't know what it is, of course, but I'm stoked and can't wait to open my present! Way to go, Mystery Author, who is obviously a faster writer than me! ^_^

Here's a heads-up for any Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki fans: NHK is re-running their documentary Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki. If you aren't able to catch NHK via your local TV stations, you can stream it live online; see the website for details. I watched it when it aired previously, and it was a fascinating look at Miyazaki, who to no one's surprise, is still working despite having "retired". This documentary depicts his struggle to create a completely CGI short film for the first time, and also the struggles of the young animators who are working themselves to exhaustion trying to achieve his vision.

This was not archived on the "Video on Demand" page the last time it aired, so tomorrow (or today, depending on your time zone) is probably the only chance you'll have to see it unless/until they air it again.
