I had a lovely Christmas, and I hope everyone on my Friends list enjoyed the holidays, too. I got some wonderful presents (including some yummy homemade cookies), but most importantly, got to spend the day with my family, including my sister who flew in for the holidays. (Although that does put a bit of a crimp in my fanfic-writing, since I'm sort of in the closet about that with my family. "Hey, Geri-chan, what are you doing on the computer?" "Oh, don't mind me; I'm just writing some gay porn." ^_^)

One of my favorite Christmas presents wasn't even really mine--someone gave my brother a little iPod dock/speaker system, but he doesn't have an iPod, so he gave it to me--yay! I was blasting my Wizard Rock Jingle Spells Christmas tunes all over the house yesterday. ^_^ My favorite song has to be from the first Jingle Spells album, "Christmas with My Mom and Dad" by Draco and the Malfoys. The singer does a wonderfully snotty Draco, with hilariously evil lyrics, singing to Harry about how he's celebrating Christmas with his parents "while yours are decomposing in the grave" and "Harry, Harry, Harry, what'd your parents get you for Christmas?"

Harudaki fans, check out the mini-Christmas fest on the Youka Nitta IJ Asylum. There are a couple of lovely entries so far, along with my own Kentucky Fried Christmas, which plays off the Japanese tradition of eating fried chicken and cake on Christmas Eve.

Manga rec and plot bunny updates beneath the cut... )

I'm doing something unusual for me today: reccing a non-Snupin HP fic! But it's a wonderful, poignant fic that's only received a couple of feedback comments, and I think that people are being scared off by the pairing (Slughorn/Lily), so I wanted to try and promote it a bit. This was originally posted on hp_unfaithful, an IJ asylum for--you guessed it--infidelity fics. (An [community profile] hp_unfaithful community also exists on LJ.)

Title: Something Old, Something New (or here on LJ, if you prefer)
Author: [personal profile] purplefluffycat
Established Pairing: Lily Evans/James Potter
Infidelity Pairing: Lily Evans/Horace Slughorn
Rating: PG-13
Words: About 1200
Summary: "You liked her, didn't you?" said Harry Potter to Horace Slughorn, "Lily Evans was one of your favourites."

I think potential readers are being squicked by the pairing, and to be honest, I almost skipped it myself, because I was imagining something icky--Slughorn having molested or taken advantage of Lily when she was a student, for example. But there's no explicit sex (note the rating), and it's not a creepy sort of story. Slughorn and Lily genuinely loved each other (although it goes without saying that I wouldn't approve of a teacher/student relationship in real life), and it's a very sweet and poignant story.

I borrowed a book from the local library called "Secrets of the Ninja" by Hiromitsu Kuroi to do a little research for my post-DH plot bunny where Snape runs off to Japan to try and forget about Lupin. He would be staying with the tengu shapeshifters who had a small role in my Always series, and I had a vague idea that a tengu patrol that Snape was accompanying would be attacked by a band of ninjas.

Yeah, I know--Snape fighting ninjas; sounds like crack fic, right? ;) The scene might or might not make it into the final draft, but I was doing the research mostly to amuse myself, and I was reading the section on ninja weapons when I came across the entry for the "fukiya" ("blow pipe"):

The Snupin section of my website is now up to date, thanks to my wonderful webmistress Maxine! All 26 chapters of Scars are now up, and I'm working on writing the next one. Deathly Hallows and this whole LJ controversy kind of distracted me, so I hadn't gotten much writing done in the last few weeks, but the story seems to be flowing nicely now. The Petshop of Horrors section should also be updated within the next week or so.

Oh, and I also got everything in the Always series up on Moonshadow except for Scars, since the policy is to only upload completed works. But when it's done, I'll archive it there.

Actually, I did get quite a bit of writing done now that I think about it. Whenever I got stuck on Scars, I did some work making notes and outlines for that post-Book 7 Snape/OMC plot bunny I had. I even wrote a rough draft of about 10 pages for the opening chapter. And since it's mostly set in Japan, where the tengu have a sort of pseudo-samurai type society, I had a lot of fun doing some research on Japanese history and literature. And lots more fun watching samurai tv dramas for more "research". ^_^ I'm just having so much fun doing this regardless of whether anyone ever reads it or not. As I mentioned before, I normally hate seeing Snape and Lupin in other pairings, but it's strangely liberating to work on something different from what I usually write. It sort of helps to think of them as completely different characters from the Always series Snape and Lupin, although there are similarities--closer to the angsty Snupin in the first story, only they never really manage to get over the past. I decided that the problem wasn't so much adultery (although there will be the complication of Lupin/Tonks), but more distrust and miscommunication. And I'm toying with the idea of throwing in a bit of Lupin/Draco--which I always thought of as a very strange pairing, but the idea has been gradually growing on me since HBP and the introduction of Greyback. I really like the idea of Draco being turned into a werewolf, and needing to rely on Lupin for support.

But I will definitely finish Scars first! I was sort of stuck on how to handle the scene where Ash gets kidnapped, but something just clicked, and now it's going smoothly. Hoping to have another chapter done soon.

Normally I don't read adultery fics, but I got completely hooked on The Blue Door by [personal profile] snegurochka_lee. The summary reads: "There is no situation, no opportunity, no sudden, aching desire that a werewolf can't control. Any man who says otherwise is just a man looking for an excuse." In it, Snape and Lupin are an established couple, but Lupin puts their relationship in jeopardy when he has an affair with Bill Weasley. He loves Snape, but his wolf feels irresistibly drawn towards Bill's and vice versa...only maybe things aren't quite what they seem, and I'll spoil the story if I give away any more information. I'd recommend this to any Snupin fan, and don't be put off by the adultery warning. It'll put you through the emotional wringer, but it'll be well worth it. No one is completely bad or good in this story; the characters are complex and well-developed, and the ending is satisfying without unrealistically tying up all the loose ends in a neat bow for a happy ending. What is great about this story is that there are no easy, black and white answers, and it really makes you think--judging by the pages and pages of commentary from the readers. ^_^

Now, I mention this story partly to plug a great fic--I'd say it's one of the best Snupin stories I've ever read, and I never thought I'd say that about a story where Lupin cheats on Snape! But also because it inspired a naggingly persistent plot bunny that I'm not quite sure what to do with. Read on if you're interested, although it's a rather long summary...
