Post-Christmas update
I had a lovely Christmas, and I hope everyone on my Friends list enjoyed the holidays, too. I got some wonderful presents (including some yummy homemade cookies), but most importantly, got to spend the day with my family, including my sister who flew in for the holidays. (Although that does put a bit of a crimp in my fanfic-writing, since I'm sort of in the closet about that with my family. "Hey, Geri-chan, what are you doing on the computer?" "Oh, don't mind me; I'm just writing some gay porn." ^_^)
One of my favorite Christmas presents wasn't even really mine--someone gave my brother a little iPod dock/speaker system, but he doesn't have an iPod, so he gave it to me--yay! I was blasting my Wizard Rock Jingle Spells Christmas tunes all over the house yesterday. ^_^ My favorite song has to be from the first Jingle Spells album, "Christmas with My Mom and Dad" by Draco and the Malfoys. The singer does a wonderfully snotty Draco, with hilariously evil lyrics, singing to Harry about how he's celebrating Christmas with his parents "while yours are decomposing in the grave" and "Harry, Harry, Harry, what'd your parents get you for Christmas?"
Harudaki fans, check out the mini-Christmas fest on the Youka Nitta IJ Asylum. There are a couple of lovely entries so far, along with my own Kentucky Fried Christmas, which plays off the Japanese tradition of eating fried chicken and cake on Christmas Eve.
It was a funny coincidence that I happened to be reading Book 3 of the Venus in Love shoujo manga (published in the US by CMX), and there was a story revolving around Christmas. The premise is that the main character Suzuna and her male neighbor Eichi are both in love with the same guy, Eichi's best friend, who is in love with someone else entirely. All their friends think that Suzuna and Eichi make a great couple, much to their horror, and the series is obviously heading in that direction. In Japan, Christmas Eve is a romantic holiday, akin to Valentine's Day, and Suzuna is feeling a little depressed about spending it alone. To distract herself and earn some extra cash, she takes on a temp job in the toy store where Eichi is working. The two of them go out to eat after work one night, and Suzuna wistfully says, "I'm sure everyone else is having a nice Christmas." When Eichi asks her what her idea of a nice Christmas is, she replies, "A bottle of bubbly...having dinner together. Chicken and Christmas cake..."
The concept is a little alien to me as an American, but I do love the idea of Christmas Eve as a romantic holiday, with chicken and cake. (Specifically, "Christmas cake," which is a sponge cake with strawberries and whipped cream frosting.) And it works well in both yaoi and shoujo! Venus in Love really is a cute title, and there's even hints of BL in it--Eichi having a crush on his guy friend, and later, there's a third guy who develops a crush on Eichi, though it seems like Eichi and Suzuna will eventually get together.
I just finished my Kikuchi-in-America story, a sort of prequel to Comeback; I want to give it one last proofreading before posting and will hopefully have it up by tomorrow. I've also started work on a story about Kikuchi and Onozuka's first date. Kikuchi has really been an inspiring character; I have so many plot bunnies about him (and Onozuka)!

Snupin news:
I had resolved to start posting my post-DH Snupin plot bunny by the end of the year, and I already have the first 3 chapters ready to go, along with a related side-story that was adapted from my Always series. However, there's so much Snupin Santa stuff coming out right now that I think it might get lost in the shuffle, so I think it would be better to hold off until January and maybe try to get another chapter or two done. I had originally intended for it to stay pretty close to canon, aside from Snape and Lupin surviving, but it's kind of morphed into this weird hybrid of canon and a mutation of my Always series--sort of an AU of an AU. Since the plot requires Snape to move to Japan after the war, I decided to recycle the Japanese OCs from Always and more AU bits kept working themselves into the story. I also have to postpone Tonks's pregnancy till after the war, for reasons which will become apparent in the fic. It's almost like Always, but keeping Lupin's and Snape's canon backgrounds (e.g. Snape being a half-blood), and spinning off into a different direction where Lupin and Snape never fully reconciled but remained a dysfunctional couple who made the wrong choices at every turn.
Eep, that sounds pretty depressing! *sweatdrop* And it kind of is, but it was an idea that grabbed me, that I just had to follow. I also still need to figure out a title for the damned thing, too. Right now the word processing file in my computer is just labeled "Tengu draft" (because Snape goes to live with the tengu in Japan post-war). "Choices" would be good, since it's all about the choices that Snape and Lupin do or don't make, but there's already a Snupin story by that title, written by The Treacle Tart. Shinedown's song "I Dare You" was an inspiration while writing this, but I'm not sure that the title really fits the story. They have another song called "The Crow And The Butterfly" which kind of makes me think of Snupin, although I guess "The Crow And The Wolf" would be more accurate. ^_^ I was also thinking of "The Road Not Taken," since the story takes a different path than Always, and Snape and Lupin keep wondering if they've made the right decisions. Although I do wonder if it's a little too hokey to name the story after the Robert Frost poem. Anyway, I have some time to think it over while contining to write the fic.
