30-Day Fanfic Writing Meme, Day 6

6. When you write, do you prefer writing male or female characters?

Well, since I mainly write slash, my answer would have to be "male"--my main characters are almost always men. The only exception I can think of is my Haru fic Dreams, which is about Fuyumi, Iwaki's sister-in-law--and boy, I really loved writing that one! It was one of those fics that practically wrote itself.

Oh, wait--Return of the Raven (Prologue to Phoenix Reborn) (Part 1, Part 2) is part of my Snupin series, but the main character is really one of my OCs, Professor Blackmore, who taught at Hogwarts during the Marauders era. She went missing, presumed dead during the first war, and the story explains her fate and her sudden reappearance around the time of OOTP.

But I do enjoy writing female characters, although they tend to be supporting characters. In Haru, I love Shimizu, though I haven't written too much about her--someday I want to give her a fic of her own. Katou's mother and sister made a brief appearance towards the end of Unmasked. For OCs, there are Onozuka's grandma, sister, and mother, and Kikuchi's mother. Oh, and also Mizutani-sensei and Asami-chan (the screenwriter and leading actress in Kikuchi and Onozuka's movie).

For my Snupin fics, there are a lot of female characters I love writing about. I have a soft spot for Hermione, probably because I was the studious type as a kid, although I definitely wasn't as bossy as she is. Also Tonks--(the spunky Tonks in OOTP, not the mopey one in HBP), Narcissa, Luna, Pansy, and Millicent. Fleur has appeared a couple of times in minor roles--I can't help but admire someone who has the nerve to stand up to Molly Weasley! ^_^ For the OCs I loved writing Professor Blackmore, Selima Snape, Narcissa's childhood friend Aileen, Ariane Donner (Evan Rosier's lover), and Serafina Avery (the Death Eater Avery's daughter). I even loved writing Imogen McNair (Walden's daughter), even though she was evil and ruthless.

For Petshop of Horrors, there's Jill, Leon's fellow detective, and among the pets, Pon-chan the raccoon girl and Honlon the three-headed dragon.

I see a lot of meta posts about how female characters don't get enough love, and every now and then I think that I'd like to give the spotlight to one of the ladies, but I think it will have to wait until I have more time, or until an irresistible plot bunny bites me (as it did with Dreams). But if I ever win the lottery and can devote my copious spare time to fanfic writing, I'd like to write some of the plot bunnies I have percolating on the back burner:

For Snupin: a story about Draco's attempts to take the utterly unromantic Serafina out on a date (although I guess that means Draco would also be a main character). And maybe I'd like to write a bit more about Selima and Professor Blackmore. I also have an odd plot bunny about Imogen McNair and the bittersweet dreams she has during the full moon after she's imprisoned in Azkaban (she was turned into a werewolf at the end of Scars).

For Petshop: I'd like to write a few sequels to Daiki, including a story about Jill's daughter Lian (an OC) as a rookie cop being forced to confront the supernatural nature of the petshop during a case. Would also like to write a story about Pon-chan finding a new love, after having her heart broken by Leon's brother Chris, as well as a story devoted to Honlon and her dragon suitor Ti Lung (another OC).

For Haru: I really would like to write this sample prompt from the Embracing Spring fest: Shimizu gets a divorce and decides to take a cooking course as she is a remarkably bad cook. There she meets and falls in love with Kenzaki, who has troubles explaining to his host club boss why he isn't earning any money"! Would also like to write a divorced or widowed Shimizu hitting it off with Kikuchi's younger brother in my Comeback series. And I'd like to write more about Fuyumi and Hina-chan. And also Youko--maybe her visiting Katou and Iwaki at home or vice versa, or to figure out how she and her husband got together, and how he really feels about his infamous brother-in-law. (Although I guess that last plot bunny is maybe more about Keita than Youko.)
