30-Day Fanfic Writing Meme, Day 11

11. Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

Yes, and definitely romance, since even the supporting characters in my fics pair up unexpectedly! Sometimes I like writing happy, fluffy romance, and more often I like to write really angsty romances where there's some obstacle standing in the way of the couple's happiness--which is probably why I like Snupin so much! There's obviously a major obstacle to overcome when one person in the relationship hates and resents the other--and that's not even touching the Death Eater and werewolf complications. But I can only enjoy writing angst if I know that everything is going to turn out all right in the end. I am a sucker for happy endings, and tend to avoid reading stories where I know it's not going to end happily, or at least hopefully--I'll almost always avoid stories with a "character death" warning if the character in question is one that I like.

There are exceptions, of course--Bronze Ribbons wrote a really moving Haru fic, As Strong as Life, in which Yoshizumi helps Katou deal with Iwaki's death. As I've said many times, a good writer can make me overcome my usual dislikes and squicks. But in general, even if I can appreciate the craftsmanship of the writing, sad endings leave me feeling a little depressed, and since I read fanfic for fun, I tend to avoid those.

(Although to contradict everything I just said, I was recently telling Snapelike that I had a plot bunny about Onozuka trying to comfort Katou after Iwaki dies, and Katou not quite being able to move on. So go figure--sometimes my imagination or subconscious or whatever decides to act rebellious. >_<)

Another thing I seem to like writing about is families: Snape and Lupin raising a child, whether it's Teddy in semi-canon-compliant stories, or foster sons Theo and Dylan in my Always series. In my Petshop series, Leon and D raise a son, Daiki, and their extended family includes Leon's brother Chris and the pets in the shop. It's sort of canon that Leon and D are parents to Honlon, the three-headed dragon, since they imprinted their personalities on her before she hatched out of her egg. (I realize this sounds very weird to anyone who hasn't read the series!) And in my Haru stories, there's Kikuchi's very comfortable, loving relationship with his family vs. Onozuka's more conflicted relationship with his.
