30-Day Fanfic Writing Meme, Day 20
20. Do you ever get bunnied from other people's stories or art in the same fandom?
Yes, all the time! As I mentioned on Day 18, Bronze Ribbons' Haru drabble More Than Kin and Less Than Kind, which is about Katou and Kikuchi both being cast in a stage production of Hamlet, inspired a follow-up story from me: Realism (Hamlet Done Haru-style), and we've bunnied each other back and forth with our Yoshizumi/Kenzaki fics. And I have a Haru/Antique Bakery crossover bunny percolating on the back burner, thanks to this comment thread on Flattered and Insulted. Also, her FAKE/Haru crossover Professionals made me wonder whether Sawa misses police work. That combined with this discussion we had in the comments of my own fic Sanctuary about my fanon version of Kikuchi's detective father inspired another unwritten bunny about Sawa and Kikuchi's father having worked together in the police department before. All this bunny-ing is something of a mixed blessing, as I already have more bunnies than I know what to do with, but for better or worse, we always seem to feed each other's bunnies, and you know how bunnies multiply! ~_^
I also get bunnied by Snapelike's Haru fics, as mentioned on Day 19: Masks, Removed inspired my own Mochimune/Miyasaka plot bunnies. And although I always say that I hate character death fics and that I couldn't stand to see Iwaki and Katou broken up, her fic Dust to Dust (in which Iwaki and Katou's marriage is nearly ruined) combined with Bronze Ribbons' As Strong As Life (in which Yoshizumi promises a dying Iwaki that he will look after Katou) inspired two similar Onozuka/Katou plot bunnies in which Onozuka tries to comfort Katou after (1) Katou and Iwaki temporarily break up or (2) Iwaki dies. Character death and breaking up a favorite OTP are something I never do in fics, and yet these bunnies are so vivid that I think I will end up writing one or both eventually.
I should add that the three of us are good enough friends that we feel comfortable playing around in each other's fic universes. If I were inspired by the fic of someone I didn't know well, I'd obviously ask permission before writing something based on that fic. (Not counting very general or common fanfic ideas like, say, "Snape and Lupin raise Teddy together" or "Iwaki and Katou have sex in a public place.")

As for being bunnied by fan art--not so much, although I've seen many gorgeous pieces of Snupin and Petshop art. (I haven't really come across any Haru fan art.) Maybe it's because I don't know most of the artists well enough to say, "Hey, can I write a fic based on your artwork?"
The Trading Places challenge was an exception, although I'm not sure if it counts, since it was an official Snupin challenge in which writers wrote stories based on another person's art, and the artists made artwork based on someone's fic. However, we did get a chance to look over the offered art and stories before we signed up, and two of Karasu Hime's pieces caught my eye, and I did come up with plot bunnies before I officially claimed them. The resulting stories are Bell Dancer (Part 1 Part 2, Part 3) and A Sort of Fairytale (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5). (You can find links to the artwork in the headers.) And in return, Karasu made some awesome fan art for me--she drew one of my minor OCs, Naoki, in the first pic looking so sly and charming that I really want to write a fic about him someday!
Similarly, for Snapedom's Summer Fest, I wrote a Snupin and Snape-and-Lupin gen fics based on The Bitter Word's artwork: The Werewolf Jamboree and The Return of the Slytherins (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5). Once again, it was an official fic/art/crafts exchange rather than a spontaneous bunny, but I did find great inspiration in the artwork!

Yes, because they'd NEVAH do that... I mean... how many times have we written them like that - and how many times have Nitta-sensei let them go flash the goodies in front of others... OMG!
And I basically find it an honour when you or Ribbons throw your ideas into my/our universe. Also, I think the common discussion of canon and bunnies sort of have created this shared AU (with a few variations); at least for me, it is hard to distinguish or even fight against the common ideas - not that I want to. *snuggles up, content, with Ribbons And Geri*

Sometimes when I am writing fic, I have to stop and think about which pieces of information are canon or fanon, since our collective fanon universes are so ingrained in my head! I remember once I was trying to remember if Yoshizumi said in the manga that he doesn't like playing romantic roles, or if that was something I picked up from Bronze Ribbons' fics. (I think that particular line was fanon, although it's obviously canon that he has an aversion to romance, or at least, overly sentimental and soppy romance.)
