30-Day Fanfic Writing Meme, Day 22
22. Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?
Yes, as I mentioned on Day 20, I've participated in lupin_snape's Trading Places challenge, as well as Snapedom's Summer Fest. And this year I'm participating in Yuletide for the very first time!
In the past, I've stayed away from fests because (1) I generally wasn't very good at writing for other people's prompts, and (2) I'm not very good with deadlines. I was a little afraid to commit to a fest because I'd feel really bad for the recipient if I either couldn't come up with a good story, or didn't get the story done on time--not to mention incurring the wrath of the mods! I know from reading the Snupin Santa mod posts every year that running a fest is a lot of work, and I can only imagine how frustrating it must be when people drop out at the last minute or turn their stories in late. I didn't want to be one of those stress-inducing people, so I figured it was better just not to participate in a fest.
But gradually, I began getting a little more comfortable with the idea. The Snapedom comm (originally on LJ, now on IJ) had some low-key, no-pressure challenges that you could choose to take part in or not, and that allowed me to dip my toes in the water, so to speak. For example, a birthday celebration for Snape resulted in me writing Happy Birthday, Severus.
So when Trading Places came around, I felt willing to jump in and take the plunge! That went pretty well--I had signed up to write two fics and didn't quite get the second one done by the original deadline, but the mods kindly extended it for another week, and my recipient was very happy with the gifts. (And I was equally happy with mine!) That gave me enough confidence to take part in the Summer Fest later that year.
Some of my friends have taken part in Yuletide in the past (hello Bronze Ribbons and Snapelike!) and it sounded like fun, so I decided that I'd go for it this year. It's hard to find fics written in the Youka Nitta fandoms, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to try and get one written for me! ^_^ I just got my own assignment and I'm a little nervous, but excited at the same time. I've already got a few plot bunnies percolating, and I think I'll be able to come up with something that my recipient will enjoy. (And hopefully I'll be able to keep it under control and not have it turn into some monster 50k-word epic! Not that an epic-length fic would ordinarily be a bad thing, but it might be a bit hard to finish by the deadline of Dec. 20th.)

I sincerely hope it is Haru/Boku/Any YN!As for deadlines, I think I've only been regarded with some patience from mods because I actually Get Things Done, although not aaalways on the date they wanted in the first place. But I make something and hand it in. I fear December deadlines as I have six exams from now until Feb...

And anyway, I can always write a sequel later! ~_^
Deadlines: I was the type of person in school who would start writing a paper the day before it was due. But I've already started working on my bunny, so I don't think I'll have trouble meeting the deadline this time. *crosses fingers*

As for short, we'll see. I don't do short. (Unless it's 1000 words of the fastest Snupin for DD I've ever written.
Also, did we ever ask you to be in DD? Can't remember - it's been five years now...

Let me know if you ever want in... Perhaps just as a wild-card, once in a while since you're not that much into NC-17 and deadlines.
