Peter Jackson on filmmaking (+ Mochimune plot bunnies)
I was reading an interview in Rolling Stone (the Dec. 20, 2012 - Jan. 3, 2013 issue) with director Peter Jackson (The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings) and found it amusing because something he said reminded me of my fanon version of Mochimune in my Haru fics. In Part 4 of Family Visit: Okinawa, I created a bit of backstory for Mochimune, that he had attended film school but dropped out to work as a cameraman, believing that "getting actual on-the-set experience would be more valuable than sitting in a classroom."
In the RS interview, Jackson says, "I've always had a philosophy that if you want to be a filmmaker badly enough, there's nothing to stop you going out and grabbing a camera and making films. In my day it was a Super-8 camera, but obviously now it can be an iPhone. I've never really been one that's had much appreciation of film school. Obviously everyone is different, but I had a lot of kids coming to talk to me about wanting to be an apprentice, and people saying, 'I badly want to make films. I want to direct films. Can I come and make tea for you?' And I'm saying, 'Well, why do you want to make tea for me? You should just get a camera and shoot a film.'"
I just found myself grinning because it reminded me so much of how I see Mochimune! Obviously, that's just my take on the character, since the manga doesn't mention anything about whether or not Mochimune attended film school, but I see him as having little patience for a lot of classroom theory (beyond learning the necessary technical details)--and even less patience for young, would-be apprentices who want to make tea for him. OTOH, he probably could use an assistant to make tea and run errands, and it might be fun to see him dealing with some young interns. He'd probably send the more sensitive ones running off in tears, but maybe there would be one strong enough and determined enough to put up with Mochimune's ego and temper. Hmm...maybe Yukihito, since the last Haru story in Be Boy Gold showed him working in the film industry with the goal of becoming a director. And I am also reminded that I had a plot bunny about Mochimune as a young, bullied kid who finds solace in a video camera, viewing the world at a safe distance in slightly voyeuristic way, which is where he gets his start as a budding filmmaker--which nicely ties in with Jackson's advice to "just get a camera and shoot a film." (Though I suspect that actors and crew members find Jackson easier to work with than they would with Mochimune!)
I miss Mochimune's snark...man, I have to get back to writing Haru fic, but have a Yuletide NYR fic that I'm in the middle of working on that needs to be finished first.
