April Fool's Day in Japan

Yesterday I had a hankering to watch my favorite Japanese detective drama Aibou (previously discussed here), so I pulled out an old video that had some Season 6 episodes I'd recorded awhile back when it was airing on the local Japanese language station. And by sheer coincidence, it contained a 2-episode arc about a prison break--when Detective Sugishita hears the news, he tells his partner Kameyama that a woman they had previously arrested just broke out of prison, to which Kameyama replies in disbelief, "Come on, it's not April Fool's Day!"

I was kind of surprised because I had no idea that the Japanese celebrated April Fool's Day! (Well, I watched the episode before a couple of years ago when it first aired, but somehow I completely forgot about the April Fool's reference.) A quick web search brought up some Japanese internet pranks, so apparently they do indeed celebrate April Fool's Day in Japan. I thought it was funny that I just happened to find that Aibou episode right around April Fool's so I thought I'd share this bit of random trivia with the rest of you. ^_^
