Fanfic Tropes Meme (#16)
Angst:
16. How do you feel about character death in fic?
The next couple of questions are going to require a little more thought than I have time for right now, so I'll just tackle this one tonight. Generally, I don't like character death in fic, and I usually try to avoid it. Fandom is my happy place, and I tend to like stories with happy or at least hopeful endings. A really great writer can make me overcome my dislikes, but generally I shy away from character death. Passing mentions of minor character deaths don't bother as me as much, as long as the main characters aren't the ones who died--for example, a Snupin fic in which Snape and Lupin survived the war and are mourning the deaths of comrades who died in battle.
One character death fic that I actually do like is As Strong as Life by Bronze Ribbons (on IJ or A03), in which Katou is trying to carry on after Iwaki's death, with a lot of support from Yoshizumi. It's sad and beautiful, and ultimately hopeful, because we see Katou going on with life because that's what Iwaki would want, and finding comfort and a hint of future happiness with Yoshizumi, who was a good friend to both of them. I can't help but think that Iwaki would approve, because he would want Katou to be happy.
