Fanfic Tropes Meme (#17-18)
Angst:
17. Any characters who you can’t stand to see in pain?
18. Favorite angst fic?
Hmm, it's tough to say that there are characters I can't stand to see in pain, since I tend to put my favorite characters through a lot of angst before I give them a happy ending. Though I would say that I can't stand to not give Snape a happy ending, since he suffered so much in canon: lost his best friend and unrequited love, then spent 17 years living as a spy and atoning for her death by protecting the son who reminds him of his hated rival, possibly has his soul torn by having to kill Dumbledore (depending on whether or not you believe it counts as murder if Dumbledore asked him to do it), then dies a lonely death by snakebite with his former allies still believing that he betrayed them. Admittedly, he made a bad choice by joining the Death Eaters, but still...he did try to atone for his crimes, and he doesn't seem to have experienced any true happiness after Lily died--possibly even before that, when their friendship ended after the "Mudblood" incident. Snape seems to be a prime example of "life sucks and then you die," so I can't really stand not to give him some happiness in fanon, even if he has to suffer a bit before he gets there. Mirror, Mirror is the only Snupin story I ever wrote that doesn't have a happy ending, and I still feel kind of guilty about that, though not as much since
azure_rosa did a remix/sequel that does end happily!
My favorite angst fic is hands-down The Blue Door by
snegurochka_lee. No one dies, but it's full of intense, painful emotions and recriminations brought about Lupin's affair with Bill Weasley, and the question of whether or not werewolves can control their desires. I normally don't care for infidelity fics, but it's a complex issue in this story, with neither Lupin nor Snape being entirely right or wrong--they both do hurtful things to each other, although my personal sympathies lie more with Snape, and it was interesting to see the conversations going on in the comments over whose actions were worse. The characters are complex and well-developed, and that includes the supporting characters as well: Bill, Charlie, and Charlie's wife Marina, the most awesome OC ever! The story and Marina are recced in slightly more detail on my post on Awesome OCs.
