Fanfic Tropes Meme (#31)

AU:
31. Do you read AUs?

Depends on your definition of "AU"--I like reading stories where canon takes a different turn (e.g. how would the Harry Potter series have gone differently if Sirius hadn't died?), but a question further down on the meme list defines this sort of story as "UA" (universe-alterations). So I'm assuming that "AU" means putting the characters in a completely different world/setting, at least for the purpose of this meme. I'm not quite as fond of that type of story since worldbuilding is often part of what I like about canon, but I have read a few AUs that I really liked:

As mentioned in the post for questions #10-12, I really loved the Snupin AU Bungle in the Jungle, in which Snape is a Gordon Ramsay-like chef/TV host and Lupin is his assistant. Another great Snape-as-chef AU is The Mills of Manchester by Snapelike, which has a snarky, self-centered Snape who gradually comes to care for the people around him (especially Lupin, of course) and a wonderfully villainous Dumbledore. As an added bonus, it even has an appendix with recipes for some of the dishes that Snape cooks in the story! (Chef Snape seems to be a popular AU trope, probably because potion brewing is somewhat analogous to cooking.)

Another awesome Snupin AU is The Tale of the Tengu Prince and the Wolf by Omni, which transfers the Harry Potter story and characters to samurai-era Japan. I have a more detailed rec in my Snupin in Japan rec post, where I wrote: "The author brilliantly meshed together the HP characters and story into the AU setting and time period. The Japanese names are clever translations of the originals, such as Ryu (Dragon) for Draco and Takahito (Severe) for Severus. And the historically-based hatred of foreigners nicely paralells the Death Eaters' hatred towards Muggles and Muggle-born. Even if you don't know anything about Japanese history, you will love this story, but if you do, you will love it even more and appreciate all the thought that the author put into this story."

So maybe I do like AUs more than I thought I did!
