Fanfic Tropes Meme (#35-36)
AU:
35. Do you like high school and college AUs?
36. Do you like crossovers? If so, favorite crossover?
I don't hate high school and college AUs, but I don't especially like them either. As mentioned before, usually I like the setting of the canon universe as well as the characters, so it takes away part of the pleasure to change the setting. (Though as always, there are authors who can write an awesome fic about a trope that isn't normally to my taste, but I end up loving it anyway.) Also, I'm pretty far past my high school days, and I generally prefer to read about adult characters, though I do sometimes enjoy reading about Snape and Lupin during their school days at Hogwarts. However, I think that would be considered pre-canon rather than AU.
I do like some crossovers--it usually depends on whether or not I'm familiar with both fandoms, although if it's written well enough, I can enjoy a crossover where I'm only familiar with one fandom. One of my favorite crossover fics is Harry Dresden - Wizard by Rosemont, a Dresden Files/Snupin crossover written for Snupin Santa. As I wrote in my original rec post, the author really captures the feel of the Dresden Files (TV) series and does a great job of weaving the two magical worlds together. It's crafted with just the right amount of exposition and detail that Dresden Files fans can enjoy the story even if they aren't familiar with the Harry Potter series and vice versa.
