Red Riding Hood

I just wanted to share this lovely original watercolor that I recently bought, done by the nemu*nemu webcomic author/artist Audra Furuichi (aka Kitsy). It's a really beautiful piece in a different style from the more comical nemu*nemu, of a young girl in a red hood and scarf, with a forest and a white wolf in the background:

Red Riding Hood

I love the colors and shadings, and the way that the end of the scarf trails off. And what I love most of all is the expression on the wolf's face: the painting is obviously based on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale, but the wolf doesn't look scary or menacing. Maybe it's because I've read so many Snupin fics, but to me, he(?) looks pensive, maybe even protective, and I get the impression that rather than trying to eat her, he's watching over her. Gosh, this picture just gives me all sorts of werewolf plotbunnies!

If you like this painting, go check out the nemu*nemu site: I've blogged about it before, but it's a really fun and adorable all-ages-friendly webcomic about two girls, Kana and Ani, and their stuffed pups, Nemu and Anpan, who magically come to life. It's sweet without being saccharine, and I'd say it's similar in tone to the Yotsuba manga, although nemu focuses on the friendships between the girls and the pups rather than a parent-child relationship. You can find more of Audra's artwork, along with books, pins, plushies, and other goodies at the nemu*nemu shop. You can read the story from start to present for free on the website, but if you enjoy it, please consider buying the books to support the authors: they need to boost sales before they can commit to producing a seventh volume, and while some of the physical books are currently out of print, all 6 volumes are available as digital editions in the nemu*digital shop for reasonable prices.
