Fanfic Tropes Meme (#42)

Fluff:
42. Least favorite fluffy tropes?

I can't really think of anything offhand. I guess I would say it's not a specific trope that would bother me, but more if the characters were wildly OOC. Obviously you have to take a bit of artistic license to write fluff about a snarky, bitter character like Snape, but I think it's possible to show a bit of his snark amid the fluff. For example, having him be kind of gruff and brusque with his words, but showing with his actions that he cares about Lupin--maybe he says that he's only making the Wolfsbane Potion for Lupin because he needs a research subject to experiment on, but he takes special care of Lupin during the full moon, doing whatever he can to ease the pain of the transformation, and works long hours to improve the potion, until eventually Lupin realizes that Snape is doing it out of love, and a happy ending ensues. But I'd have a difficult time believing in a Snape who showers Lupin with poetry and flowers and kind words, unless he was under the influence of a mind-altering spell, in which case, that might be an interesting and amusing story! ;-)

As a less extreme example in Haru fandom, Katou is given to extravagant romantic gestures, but the more reserved Iwaki is not. So I could see Katou making homemade Valentine's chocolates for Iwaki, but not the other way around--unless maybe Katou drops a lot of blatant hints and Iwaki finally decides to give in, grumbling that Katou will sulk for a week if he doesn't (but he secretly wants to do something nice for Katou and is too embarrassed to admit it). I've written the first scenario but not the second--maybe I should write it for next Valentine's Day! ^_^
