More thoughts on Harudaki
A few more thoughts on the "Violence Lyric" chapter from the latest Harudaki tankoban...
I somehow skipped over the first page of the chapter! I think the pages got stuck together or something...Iwaki is about to leave the house with the new manager (whose name is Uekusa, btw) when he starts feeling ill, which is why he ends up at the doctor being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. Uekusa seems like a nice, earnest young man--not unlike Kaneko, and fortunately for Iwaki and Katou, not at all like Asano!
I like Onozuka as a blond, but he is surprisingly hot with black hair! (I think I was channeling Kikuchi there for a moment.)
This is just my first impression and needs to be confirmed with a more detailed translation, but I feel like Mochimune is not being as much of a jerk here as he was to Iwaki when they were filming the serial killer movie in vol. 12. He's obviously displeased with Onozuka and Katou's performances, and though he's visibly annoyed, he seems fairly calm while he hands out his critiques. (Although his poor assistant facepalms with an "Oh no, not again!" look on his face when Mochimune calls "cut!" on the unsatisfactory scene, so presumably they've already done several previous takes.) As far as I can tell (though I could be wrong), he doesn't seem to be baiting and insulting Katou and Onozuka the way he did with Iwaki, and he doesn't seem to order any extreme measures like forbidding Iwaki and Katou from seeing each other. I assume this is because he doesn't feel that they need such extreme measures, perhaps because the personalities of their characters are not so opposite from their real personalties, as Iwaki and his serial killer character were? Or is it that Iwaki tends to get more emotionally caught up in the characters that he's playing? I recall that he is overcome with emotion during the "Inside Report" scene where Katou played a dying patient. And also during the filming of "Fuyu no Semi," he has trouble separating Katou his lover from the character that Katou is playing. In contrast, while Katou is certainly Iwaki-obsessed, he seems to be better at viewing his roles objectively. Anyway, it gave me some food for thought...
And while I personally would have cast Onozuka as Ranmaru, it's actually kind of appropriate to have him and Katou playing brothers. Because they are close as brothers, and sometimes have a bit of prickly relationship, though obviously nowhere near as troubled as the murderous one between Nobunaga and Nobuyuki. And actually, Onozuka playing the scheming would-be usurper brother fits his personality much better than the devoted servant. Although maybe Katou might get a kick out of Onozuka having to bow and kneel and "my lord" to him--I know Kikuchi definitely would! ^_^ (Then again, Kikuchi is a perv...Katou is a perv, too, but only towards Iwaki.)
Ah, if only Miyasaka and Yoshizumi and Kikuchi had parts in the drama too, that would be perfect! Maybe there's still a chance for them to appear in later chapters, since the Nobunaga/Nobuyuki conflict takes place fairly early in Nobunaga's story. Given that Yoshizumi is a veteran of historical dramas, I think there's a decent chance that he could eventually show up playing one of Nobunaga's allies or rivals.
