Netflix recommendations and Sofia the First

I was looking at my latest e-mail from Netflix and wondering why it was reccing My Little Pony to me when the last thing I returned was a gay comedy/romance/drama called The Broken Hearts Club (good movie, btw--maybe I'll write up a review later). And aside from that, I usually watch anime, foreign films, and crime procedurals. Then I realized that it was probably because I watched a couple episodes of Sofia the First a few weeks ago.

I discovered it when I was browsing through the "just returned" books in the children's section at the library and came across a Sofia the First picture book that's sort of an introduction to the animated series. It's a really cute story about an ordinary girl whose single mother marries the King, thus making her a princess. When her stepfather explains that he's King Roland II because he's the second king to have that name, she declares that she must be Sofia the First (hence the title). Along with her new father, she also acquires a slightly snobbish new sister (Princess Amber) and a friendly but mischievous younger brother (Prince James).

The cartoon series shows Sofia having a new adventure each episode as she adjusts to her new life as a princess: for example, learning to ride and race a flying horse, or having a sleepover with some other princesses, or meeting some trolls who live in caverns under the palace. Each episode also has a moral that's far from subtle (e.g. "girls can do anything boys can do," or "don't judge people until you get to know them"), but the show is lighthearted and fun to watch, and I think it's great that it shows a positive example of a blended family as opposed to the old Cinderella evil stepmother and stepsisters trope.

The cartoons start with Sofia already being part of the royal family, while the picture book tells the story of how Sofia first arrived at the palace, feeling more than a little out of place, with Amber being hostile because she was jealous of her new sister. This being a Disney story, the two soon work out their differences and become true sisters.

It belatedly made me realize that maybe I should have nominated it for Yuletide, because I'd kind of like fic exploring Sofia's transition into her new family in a more in-depth and serious manner. Ah well, maybe next year!

Right, that was him--he was my favorite character in the movie! Hopefully I'll have time to do a more detailed write-up maybe later this week.
