Yuletide Reveal
Well, I mostly made it through two months of blog posting, although I missed a couple of days towards the end of the year. Happy New Year to everyone, and thanks to ![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
lore for inspiring me to keep up with the (almost) daily posting in December!
And now that Yuletide Reveals are over, I can announce the fic that I wrote for Yuletide:

Summary: A teenage boy has been charged with murder, but Nixie Swisher and Sean Lannigan are convinced that he's innocent. Eve gives them a chance to prove their case.
I was the one who nominated Nixie as a character, not expecting anyone else to request her, since she is a major character in only one book (Survivor in Death), although she does have a cameo appearance in one of the later novels. So I was surprised but delighted to find out that someone else loved her and wanted fic about her, too!
I admit, my own headcanon for Nixie was that she would become a cop like Eve when she grew up, but my recip suggested a prompt where Nixie follows in her late father's footsteps and becomes a lawyer and that Roarke's cousin Sean Lannigan becomes a cop and the two of them work a case together. I was intrigued by those possibilities, so I re-read Origins in Death and Indulgence in Death for the scenes with young Sean, and was struck by how fascinated he is with Eve's work--with the natural if slightly ghoulish interest of a young boy, and later with a more serious understanding of what it means to get justice for a victim after he discovers a dead body in Indulgence. It was a sobering experience for someone so young, and I could definitely see that making an impression on him and inspiring him to become a cop. And, as my recip suggested, it was perfectly natural that Nixie and Sean would meet during gatherings at Eve and Roarke's place and that they would become friends, being close in age.
So I had a lot of fun imagining what grown-up Nixie and Sean would be like, and it was also fun building a case for them to solve. I didn't know if my recip shipped them, so I wrote a gen casefic, but I could see it going either way, with them eventually falling in love, or having grown up together in a sense, being more like siblings and best friends. Either way, I think they would make a great team!
I really had fun writing the story, and now lawyer!Nixie and cop!Sean has become my headcanon! (Though it would still be fun to read or write an an alternate take in which Nixie is a cop, maybe working alongside Sean?)
