Oh great...GeoCities is closing

So I just finished posting my Fanfic Masterlist, with links to my older Snupin fics on my Yahoo GeoCities website, and then I see this link on the [livejournal.com profile] daily_snitch that GeoCities is closing this summer! *sigh* No new accounts are being offered, and the old ones will eventually be shut down--they say they'll give us details later on how to save our site data. No new free hosting service will be offered to replace it.

Well, it's not really that bad, since I have the Snupin fics archived at Moonshadow and Ink Stained Fingers as well. I'll think about posting them here on my journal as well, to have them all in one place, although "Aftermaths" is so friggin' long (~825,000 words!) that it would be quite a chore to chop it up into LJ-sized posts. (I really got carried away with that one.) Maybe for that fic, I'll just refer people to Moonshadow. I'll have to think about it.

I don't think I'll replace the website. I got it back when I was still posting mainly on Yahoo Groups, and it was difficult for readers to find the past fics and chapters mixed up in all the other message posts, so a volunteer (the lovely Maxine) offered to set up and maintain the site for me in order to keep all the fics in one place. I don't really know enough about html coding and such to maintain the site myself, although I can manage to get by here on LJ and IJ, relying heavily on the rich text editor. Since I've been using LJ and IJ as my fic archives since moving over here, I think it would be easiest just to keep on posting here without worrying about a separate archive. Anyhow, I have some time to think it over and figure out what to do before the site goes down.

ETA 4/26/09: Hugs and kisses to the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] snapelike, who is setting up a site for me with e-fiction, which should be easy to use, and promises to help me upload if I have trouble! I'll post an update when the site is up and running.

Well, that relieves me of trying to figure out what I want to do with my GeoCities site. ;-) I took down the content about a month or two ago, because I wanted to figure out a focus for the web site and work on it a bit. Now I guess I can just let it languish. My LJ is really my "home page," anyway, and I have a blog for my fanfic on IJ.

I think that blogs and journals and such now serve the function that personal web sites used to serve, but much more dynamically. Still, I remember the old Geo fondly (before it was acquired by Yahoo, and was divided into neighborhoods and addresses!) and feel like it's the passing of an era.

Aftermaths is 825,000 words?!? O.O That's just... holy crap, that's LONG. However did you manage?

Also, I'm sorry to hear your site will be going down, but you'll always have LJ and IJ.

Aftermaths is a lovely monster of work as is that entire series.

Aftermaths was like the fic that wouldn't end...I started posting it on Yahoo Groups as a WIP, and I kept going and going, like the Energizer Bunny! ^_^

It was probably because I was spinning off storylines for several canon characters and OCs in addition to Snape and Lupin, so it got a little out of hand, but I had a great time writing it. If I were writing it today, I'd break it down into several smaller connected stories.

Does it have natural section breaks that would lend themselves to breaking it into chapters? You don't need to think of thematic titles or anything; just "Chapter 1," "Chapter 2," etc. would suffice.

Holy hell, 825K is about four times the size of a long (very long) book manuscript! You should be writing epic fantasy and making some serious money. ;-)

Haha, I know it was even longer than Order of the Phoenix, which is saying something! And people say that JKR needs an editor--she has nothing on me, at least in terms of length! ^_^

I'm sure I can find breaking points, although I read somewhere that the max limit for LJ posts is about 10k words, which means that I'd end up with about 82 chapters! But actually, Snapelike, whom I know from my Snupin and Harudaki comms, has offered to set up a site for me with e-fiction, which she says has a rich text editor similar to LJ's, so the problem has been solved! (And she'll help me with the uploading if I have trouble.)

I've met such great people here on LJ and IJ!

I'd offer to help with coding but I screw it up every time. (sigh) I can't even code on LJ.

So, I was bord and was going to re-read some of my favorte fanfic (YOU!) and I go to said geocities site and notice that you don't have all of the ones from your LJ there and I was thinking 'huh, does she not post here any more?'

So, I came over to check, and see this. Question answered, eh?

The lack of more recent updating would be my fault... RL has gotten very busy for me and I've fallen down on the job in updating Geri's sight...

I was going to email you about the GeoCities thing, but obviously you saw the post. Don't worry about being busy--I have my journal, so I wasn't worrying about keeping the site up to date.

It's good to hear from you, and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all the work you put into the site. It's sad that it's going down, but I still have LJ and IJ, and a friend has offered to set up an e-fiction site for me that she says I should be able to update easily on my own.
