Dying didn't hurt as much as he thought it would. Or to be more accurate, dying hurt quite a bit, but being dead didn't hurt at all. In fact, he even found a measure of joy in being reunited with the friends he thought he'd never see again: Sirius, James, and Lily. Of course he was sad to be leaving Teddy without a father, but Tonks would be there for him, and she'd be a good mother. And as for Tonks...Remus felt a bit of guilty relief at being able to escape his ill-considered marriage.
After they accompanied Harry to his final confrontation with Voldemort, they continued on their journey to...well, whatever came next, and Remus found himself walking towards a golden light in the distance that was warm and inviting. It seemed to promise comfort and peace, an end to the pain and heartbreak he had endured ever since Severus had betrayed him--betrayed them all--by killing Dumbledore on the Astronomy Tower.
But he felt as if something were tugging at him, pulling him away from his friends and that promise of peace. Lupin struggled against that unseen force, but a familiar voice shouted, "Damn you, Lupin! I will not let them take you away from me again--not this time!"
James and Sirius started to reach for him, but Lily stopped them, saying, "It isn't his time yet." She smiled at him warmly as he was pulled further and further away, and he thought he heard her say something about Severus, but just then he fell backwards and plunged into darkness...
The first thing Remus saw when he opened his eyes was Severus's face.

Afterword: This was originally part of an intended longer fic for Decade of Snape/Lupin project, but I realized there was no way that I was going to finish by June 30th. So I decided to take the beginning of the fic and post it as sort of a prologue, hopefully with the rest to follow next month.
