It starts off with the basic premise of a police procedural show (the main character, Nick, is a homicide detective in Portland), but adds a unique fantasy/horror twist: creatures from fairy tales and folklore, like werewolves and witches, are actually real. Nick discovers that he is descended from a long line of Grimms, described as "an elite line of criminal profilers" that research, track down, and kill the fairy tale creatures, who call themselves Wesen. When Nick suddenly comes into his Grimm heritage, he finds himself able to see the true forms of the Wesen (who appear as normal people to ordinary humans), and realizes that many of the crimes he is investigating involve Wesen as the murderers and/or the victims.
